They are fantastic. Plumbers will rail against them, but they are game changing for those of us DIY. Especially if they are in accessible areas. I had had several going for 15 years now with zero leaks and if one did? It would take all of 60 seconds to swap it out. You really need to make sure the pipe is deburred and clean however, or the o ring won't seal around the debris or grime.
keep in mind
this one connects to cpvc, not pvc pipes

Can these be used as a shut off for the winter. I'm looking for one to shut off water spigot in the winter.

Don't see why not

After owning a home for the past ten years, every plumbing mishap that I've had to redo, I've added one of these for individual cutoffs in preparation for any upcoming unforseen events. Definitely worth doing.

Is this a DIY or would I need a plumber?

For about $20 in materials and a very basic understanding of plumbing basics you can DIY.

Let me know what you're thinking and I can point you in the right direction

I'm not a pro but if I were, I wouldn't use shark bites. That's not to say that these are bad or won't work. Rather, I'd rather do what's been done for decades.

Cast iron and clay was the standard for decades too...

Do these have a locking clip like those on airlines to keep the collar from pushing in?

I have some leaking valves on the exposed pipes going to my cloths washer hoses. I've used Sharkbite before and it worked well. Would you guys recommend these with some sort of adaptor for the hoses? Or should I plan on soldering on new traditional valves?

I used Sharkbite on a new water heater install I did like 8-9 years ago, no problem since.

It's DIY, and in a few years you'll need a plumber. Maybe a carpenter as well.

How are these versus the (newer?) Sharkbite Max line which dont have the little plastic stiffener inside? According to the manufacturer the Max ones are superior in every way but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I have a project coming up, trying to decide between the two.

I'd go with something that would allow you to drain the water between the valve and the spigot. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D6X29TV

How are modern sharkbite connectors? I was working on something recently that had 15+ year old Sharkbite connectors and it was a PITA to get it to not leak

From what I was researching when these fails it is because they are not properly cleaned for any rough burrs when cutting the pipe.

These things are very easy to use. Like others have said you want a clean cut which you can do with a cheap pipe cutting tool. They make sharkbite connectors for washing machines. You could use those.

I agree that sharkbite valves/caps are great to have around in case of emergency. (With the valve you could even attach it if the shutoff main were broken/unavailable by pushing it on with the valve open then closing the valve)
