No. You port your real number to google voice and then purchase any mvno deal there is at any time, get a new fake number from them when activating and set google voice to forward your calls to that number. You use your regular dialer or goigle voice dialer on your phone. Done and you never have to deal with porting nonsense again and can take advantage of mvno deals at any time.
This is not true - it's better than before but I've came across several institutions where it didn't work because they don't accept voip numbers.
It's not a stop gap, I have used GV as my main number for more than ten years now. I don't need to worry about or deal with the customer service about port-in or port-out my number while taking full advantage of whatever introductory promotional rates various wireless providers have been offering. I just got a new number everytime and forward the calls to my main number to whatever new numbers I got. Have disposable numbers from time to time can also come in handy when you don't have to give someone or some place your permanent main number.

I've had this service a couple months and the data stopped working and the amount of problems with this carrier is unlike anything I've ever seen. Nothing but problems since the beginning. First I unchecked the box at signup for the $5 a month addon for mobile hotspot usage, but somehow they charged me anyway and I had to call up and ask to have it removed. All over the app and website it STILL shows as being enabled, but I haven't been charged again at least. The Infimobile app is unusable on iPhone, the text is all broken and you can't see the buttons, complete disaster. It works ok on Android though. Somehow I had everything working fine but now I can't access the internet and I don't even use it for voice/text but I'm guessing that part works. I'm ready to give up on this service and I couldn't recommend against it hard enough. Oh, and the last time I was on the website trying to troubleshoot all this I got stuck in some kind of nasty web-bug-loop that prevented me from being able to use the site AT ALL. I couldn't have imagined all the problems and I had to see it for myself given how cheap it was. The text at the bottom of the site saying the service is still super duper premium despite the low price is a straight up lie if you ask me. Maybe in a couple years I'll try again.

I have GV on a dedicated dummy login which is only used for GV. It is never used for email, browsing, or on any mailing lists. Since I use the service for my business and make tangible income with the product, which has NO ADS, I would say that it is a net positive for me.

Of course, no one enjoys losing money, and I have confirmation from a friend who works at Google's Chelsea location (on android, not on voice, so I take the gossip with a grain of salt) that GV makes they very little money, and as a result, is one of those products which could disappear at any moment. But I heard that same thing over 14 years ago.

They did. They bought the whole company in 2007...the thing was invite only back in the day, and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get one of the said invites.

I have been looking forever for a paid alternative which had the level of polish (which isnt much, if you know how buggy GV is) as GV, but nothing comes close at any price. There are services which will pick up calls for you, forward for you, and let you text through them...but none of them will do all of that simultaneously. Since I use the product for business, it warrants actually paying for, but GV for business offers no tangible difference for me (besides human support). It is easily worth $5-10 a month for me.

Speeds are slow in congested or less coverage area. It takes a few seconds to connect even to Google maps.
I can't seem to get tetherfi work. Have been searching or other hotspot options.

That's just simply not true, at least for me and most of the GV users I know. GV can also send you emails about missed calls and voicemail transcripts, unless you also missed emails...
It's true with several GV in different cities. GV did not send any info if there is a miss call. It always says cannot make a call because of blah blah blah...

Yeah I do something quite similar although I don't even bother forwarding the number. I give people my Google voice number.

I use a variety of prepaid deals that I pick up at entry level deals and experiment with without even giving that number out. I consider it a data only device, I don't even bother forwarding the calls and I don't get the number out to any.
The only exception is there are some verifications that won't stop the Google voice number but it's extremely rare and The benefits you get from relying on Google voice full time or so much better.

Not to mention Google voice works in any place with a good internet connection whereas someone like me T-Mobile and AT&t will barely work at all in my house.

Right, certain institutions might require an SMS number. But increasingly most things will let you verify through a Google voice number I have found. Even like my local DMV

This sounds like a logistical nightmare to me.
Honestly it's much less of the logistical nightmare than going through carriers. I can understand being resistant to it because people are just so used to doing something one way.... But if you don't believe me try it yourself. Well you have your mint mobile still active just live your life as if your Google voice number was your real number.

See how many times you run into issues with verification because I almost never do. And then while you're at it starts shopping and realize that you can get introductory rates all the time on prepaid deals.

Right now I'm paying 20 bucks for 6 months of coverage on a phone number I will never give out to anyone and it doesn't matter because my doctors and government agencies and everybody else can reach me on my Google voice number with no problem

Before you s*** on it give it a try. Pretty much guarantee you it would save you hundreds of dollars a year

There are definitely a few places but to me the amount of hassles I would have to deal trying to port numbers between carriers and so on... I think it's much better overall solution.

This method saves me thousands of dollars a year and the only time there's some kind of verification issue is such an infrequent occurrence that I can't even remember the last time it happened to me.

So yeah once every million years you might have to use your other number to verify something. Or, find an alternative service that supports Google voice of which one almost certainly exists

99.9% of the time no one knows it's a Google voice number to begin with.

Il he is suggesting transferring your main number over to Google voice but another option is just to start using your Google voice number as your main number

That way you can take advantage of all the introductory rates you want, are always able to get in touch with even if your phone bill runs out...

As someone that's been doing this for years now I can tell you that the hiccups are minimal, way less than it was actually dealing with carriers constantly and having to watch introductory prices drop and all of that.

Nothing is perfect here you really are dealing with annoying carriers with convoluted porting systems or once and every 6 months you might have to verify a number outside of your Google voice account.

Not a bad deal to save hundreds of dollars a year and give yourself tons of flexibility on trying new MV&O's out

Does it support WiFi call?
It does for me. I ordered it showed up in 4 days and it works for Wi-Fi calling with Verizon. I had limited expectations cuz my house is bad service for most carriers so I could never get Wi-Fi calling to work with T-Mobile prepaid options. AT&t would work with Wi-Fi calling if I could get it set up sometimes it wouldn't let me do that.

So if nothing else this company has proved to me that inside my house verizon-based MDNOs are the way to go

iunno about you but $1000s is a stretch. I've been doing this for over a decade as well. Promo rate for mint is like $10-15/month that same plan when you do yearly subscription is like $20.. 12x$10 =$120, plus you got the hassle of always finding a deal, which it hasnt happened recently in the last 2 years, but there used to be dry spells when mint was the only service really offering cheap sign up deals and if they didnt have anything then you were paying normal rates. Time is money as well.

Hi there! Thank you for reaching out. My name is Tom and I will be assisting you today.

Hi tom

21:50

Hello, How May i assist you?

21:51

I am purchasing your prepaid sim card from Amazon. However I have iPhone 15 which only accepts esim. How can I use your service?

21:51

Thank you for your interest in Infimobile services. In this case, we need to activate your physical SIM card first. After activating the physical SIM card, we can then convert it to eSIM.

21:52

Ok. How do we activate the SIM card ?

Is there a charge to convert physical to esim?

21:53

After receiving the SIM card, please visit our website at https://infimobile.com/activate to activate your physical SIM card. Once you have activated the physical SIM card, please contact us to convert it into an eSIM.

21:54

There is no charge for converting a physical SIM to an eSIM.
You know fairness it's hard to blame a startup for not being able to hook up Apple users. Apple made the ridiculous decision to unilaterally remove the physical sim tray only for America. The vast majority of small carriers have not caught up to this yet and it will take years for many of them to do it.

I don't know anyone, even among iPhone users, that is happy that the physical SIM card tray has been removed from their phone.

Personally I would never buy a phone without a SIM card tray. I'm glad this is one trend that hasn't caught on and probably never will because not having a SIM tray put makes people more inclined to stay with one phone and one carrier... Samsung and Google in OnePlus need people to switch to participate in the market share so they're going to keep having physical sims.

Sadly anyone who bought an iPhone 15 in the United States or an iPhone 14 is going to have to run any of these issues and will be limited in their ability to play around with smaller carriers or the international market.

I knew people that had to set up an entirely separate phone and phone number when they went traveling just because of his nonsense from Apple.

And it's just terrible for people that like to use a lot of different phones and swap Sims. People that review tech or carrier plans . People that like to try different phones or import phones etc...

This is one of the many reasons I just avoid Apple products now. Last thing I want is to get locked into their system. Especially when they're going out of their way to make it uniquely bad for Americans and we don't have the EU to protect us
