If you already have a TextNow SIM card but find it no longer works you may need to update your APN settings inside your smartphone. One can use the TextNow support chatbot to get the new APN settings. These settings can also be found online in their support article: https://help.textnow.com/hc/en-us...er-network Once I input the new APN info data worked perfectly on older SIM and sure enough the app is showing my free essentials data because I used the app to activate the SIM several years back. Sweet deal!woot

As an experienced user of Textnow, those considering it should understand:

1) The usage requirement to keep your phone number alive and active seems to vary by area code, yet not specified to the user, although they do send out warning emails. It can vary from once every couple of weeks, to every couple of days. Once you lose your phone number, you can sign up for a new one.

2) Many, if not most of the SMS verification services will not work with Textnow numbers. I'm not going into all the details, but this is not a traditional carrier where your SIM card phone number is governed by the SIM card. In fact while there is a phone number associated to the SIM card, that number isn't usable to the customer. Instead Textnow assigns you another number, which is in effect a voice over IP number that it uses over your wifi connection, or when not present, Textnow's data connection.

3) They are notorious for suddenly cancelling your account if you have any use of a VPN on your phone. Apparently they view this as something non US users do to try to get a free Textnow account from overseas, and so cancel your account, without warning, upon detecting this.

4) The ads that are show on your phone, over time, are becoming more intrusive and more video orientated. Before, I hardly noticed the ads. Now they do bother me.

As such, I don't see this suitable for most people as their main cell number, but instead as something for a second, or backup phone, if you can accept the downsides to this service.
For those looking for onetime SMS verification, companies like SMSPool provide numbers you can rent for 24 hours or longer, that are guaranteed to work with the selected service. I needed one for a Claude Ai account initial setup and rented it for 36 cents.
So you're getting the SIM card AND 1GB of data every month, all for a 1 time $4.99 charge? Do the calls and texts use up the 1GB of data? How long will the 1GB/mo of data last for free?

I'm confused....when I go to sign up, I see nothing about an Free Essentials Plan with 1GB data/mo. Where is a link to that? In the app I downloaded, it goes straight to buying the SIM card. When do I pick the plan?

Where does it say anything about a free 1GB data/mo? Don't see that.

Edit: I found this page which explains the types of apps you can use the 1GB of data with. Apparently, it's NOT data that you can use for just anything you want to:

OP should edit the title of this thread as it is misleading to some forum members. As mentioned throughout this thread, the free data is for ESSENTIAL DATA:

"With Free Essential Data, you can use most email, calendar, maps, notes, and rideshare apps without needing to be connected to Wi-Fi"

https://help.textnow.com/hc/en-us...ntial-Data

Anyway: I have never personally tried it, but supposedly numbers ported into Textnow are locked in and will not be taken away due to inactivity. Another benefit I heard is 2FA works for senders using 5 or 6 digit numbers. Senders of 2FA using the full 10 digit calling number to a ported in Textnow number does not work.

In other words according to others (because I have not tried this):

1. A ported number into Textnow does not need to be actively used for fear of it being lost. There also no extra fee required to lock down the number.

2. Once your number is ported into Textnow, you can now receive 2FA codes if the call is from XXXXX or XXXXXX. However, codes sent from XXX-XXX-XXXX will still not work.

Even if a number is ported in, the Textnow app is still required for calls and texts.

If anybody previously ported a number into Textnow or will be planning to do so, feel free to post your experience as it compares to a number assigned to you from Textnow.

They don't list Google Voice in their list of apps that work with the free essentials data, but GV does work for me using Textnow, and others that have reported this as well.
Can you please confirm that is still true?
I tested it just now and I can use GV for texting but NOT voice calls either inbound or outbound with the TextNow SIM and importantly NO WiFi.
Thanks.

I can't verify this myself because I don't have the TextNow SIM card, but maybe try clearing the cache and data on Google Voice. Uninstall and reinstall the app. If you can send text messages, I assume phone calls should work too. Hopefully, it's just a problem within the app itself.

Also, try rebooting your phone, clearing the cache from the bootloader menu, and resetting the network settings in the reset menu. As a last resort, consider resetting the whole phone back to factory defaults.

If any of these solutions work, let us know? And do you get an error when you try to place calls or what happens?

More than likely TextNow is explicitly excluding GV from making or receiving voice calls as that is a direct threat to their business model and would utilize their "Free Data" to their detriment. The fact that GV texts work is more than likely because the texts are using a different protocol and a different sub domain that is shared by a whitelisted App/Service such as Google Maps or similar.
That is why I was surprised you were vouching for the functionality as I have tested that exact scenario previously.
Thanks for answering though. Smilie

That was also my other thought, but I'd rather be hopeful than doubtful. A few others claimed Google Voice worked, but I'm not 100% sure for text or voice or both. So If the user tries all that troubleshooting and it works, then hip hip hooray!

Edit: Oh, you're the same user. Okay, it's probably what you said then, but I was hoping it was just some app misbehavior rather than TextNow locking it down. Based on other user feedback, it seems like it works, but I'd have to go back and see if they elaborated on text and voice, which one person may have mentioned, but I don't remember exactly.

I have textnow SIM on my old Android 9 unlocked phone.
My phone doesn't support 5g, 4g LTE is max I would get I was thinking.
I am still showing 2g which I have had in the past also but data never worked actually.

Can anyone else using TextNow on a non-5g phone confirm if getting 4g LTE data?

TIA
Check out your phone's 4G frequency bands.
TextNow uses T-Mobile network, and the bands are 2, 5, 4, 66 / 12, 71

Use the TN IMEI checker and see if it says yes or no?

I have a sim from a year or so ago when they were $1. I have it in a phone that checks out compatible. I can make wifi calls in the app. When I am outside of my wifi range, I can not call or text on the mobile data. Do I need a new simm or am I just doing something wrong?

I can't verify this myself since I don't have the TextNow SIM card, but first, check the TN app to confirm you're on the Essentials plan and ensure you're using the TN app rather than the native dialer or messaging app when you disconnect from Wi-Fi.

If that's sorted, try clearing the cache and data for the TN app, uninstall then reinstall it.

If the problem persists, reboot your phone, clear the cache from the bootloader menu, and reset network settings.

As a final step, if you got nothing else to lose, consider a factory reset. If it works or not, let us know, and if none of this stuff helps, then yes you might just require a new SIM unfortunately.
