If you already have a TextNow SIM card but find it no longer works you may need to update your APN settings inside your smartphone. One can use the TextNow support chatbot to get the new APN settings. These settings can also be found online in their support article: https://help.textnow.com/hc/en-us...er-network Once I input the new APN info data worked perfectly on older SIM and sure enough the app is showing my free essentials data because I used the app to activate the SIM several years back. Sweet deal!woot

As an experienced user of Textnow, those considering it should understand:

1) The usage requirement to keep your phone number alive and active seems to vary by area code, yet not specified to the user, although they do send out warning emails. It can vary from once every couple of weeks, to every couple of days. Once you lose your phone number, you can sign up for a new one.

2) Many, if not most of the SMS verification services will not work with Textnow numbers. I'm not going into all the details, but this is not a traditional carrier where your SIM card phone number is governed by the SIM card. In fact while there is a phone number associated to the SIM card, that number isn't usable to the customer. Instead Textnow assigns you another number, which is in effect a voice over IP number that it uses over your wifi connection, or when not present, Textnow's data connection.

3) They are notorious for suddenly cancelling your account if you have any use of a VPN on your phone. Apparently they view this as something non US users do to try to get a free Textnow account from overseas, and so cancel your account, without warning, upon detecting this.

4) The ads that are show on your phone, over time, are becoming more intrusive and more video orientated. Before, I hardly noticed the ads. Now they do bother me.

As such, I don't see this suitable for most people as their main cell number, but instead as something for a second, or backup phone, if you can accept the downsides to this service.
For those looking for onetime SMS verification, companies like SMSPool provide numbers you can rent for 24 hours or longer, that are guaranteed to work with the selected service. I needed one for a Claude Ai account initial setup and rented it for 36 cents.
So you're getting the SIM card AND 1GB of data every month, all for a 1 time $4.99 charge? Do the calls and texts use up the 1GB of data? How long will the 1GB/mo of data last for free?

I'm confused....when I go to sign up, I see nothing about an Free Essentials Plan with 1GB data/mo. Where is a link to that? In the app I downloaded, it goes straight to buying the SIM card. When do I pick the plan?

Where does it say anything about a free 1GB data/mo? Don't see that.

Edit: I found this page which explains the types of apps you can use the 1GB of data with. Apparently, it's NOT data that you can use for just anything you want to:

With the Free Essential Data plan, you can use certain apps related to email, calendar, maps, notes, and rideshare, such as Gmail, Google Maps, and Uber. So unless you can route through one of these apps, it won't work for browsing other pages.

Edit: However, some email apps like Microsoft Outlook 365 and Gmail may let you access the internet indirectly. If you receive an email with a web link, clicking it can open the page within the app itself. This depends on how each app handles links and attachments in emails, so while not fully functional as a web browser, these apps provide some access to web content.

Some users disagree and one user stated that porting your number offers certain protections under the law. The idea is that if you port a number you already own to a new service, it becomes your property and can't be easily taken away.

TextNow doesn't currently support eSIM. It seems that TextNow is aware of this demand and could be working on it for the future. Until then, if your phone only uses eSIM, it won't be compatible with TextNow's physical SIM service.

A web browser is undoubtedly essential, and since ads appear across other features, they could also be added to the browser itself.

I read comments mentioning promotions ranging from $1 to $2, but I didn't come across any comments saying they were free, unless I'm mistaken.

I checked the map, and yes, the TextNow service and data do work in Canada and Mexico. However, the TextNow website states that you need a certain plan for this coverage, but it doesn't specify which plan. Someone left a comment on page one saying the SIM works in parts of Canada but made no mention of this Essential Data free plan.

Their webpage says, "TextNow offers free on-the-go, nationwide coverage," and by "nationwide," I'm pretty certain they mean within the U.S. only for the Essential Data free plan. So, it seems Canada and Mexico most likely would be a separate add-on, but that's just what I can figure out from surfing the site; I didn't ask anyone at TextNow.

"Canada and Mexico partner coverage benefits: Phone automatically switches to use one of our wireless network partners when coverage is available. Call, text, and browse in Mexico & Canada with qualifying services and plans."

I noted earlier that I ported in my phone number. I checked a validation app, it shows as:

Phone Type
MOBILE
Phone Carrier
TextNow
Risk Summary

LOW RISK
The phone is not a VOIP phone number. It is operated by TEXTNOW WIRELESS - SVR

This is my ported in phone number. (The one I can also use on the Website for messaging) I've also used it for Zelle and other verifications.
So are you saying all you had to pay was the $4.99 to activate and port in your number? And after that you dont have to be pay any monthly addons/fees or risks for losing your number after a couple weeks of no activity?

What happens when you open an app that is not listed with data on, wifi off?

Would the app not connect to the Internet?
Would the app connect to the Internet and not use the free data and instead change your per MB?

Are there any hidden fees or tricky scenarios to be aware of to not be nickel and dimed?

I think they have significantly reduced the amount of time you have to call or text in order to keep the number active. I started getting weekly reminders to use it or I'd lose the number and their website states that you should use it at least once every 2 days to fully ensure it doesn't get deleted.

https://www.textnow.com/blog/keep...now-number [textnow.com]
I had a number that I used for 3 years. I made sure to use it at least once every two weeks. Two months ago, with no prior warning from TextNow, it was taken from me and given to someone else. I looked and my last usage had been 10 days before. Very strange. No warning at all. I have a lot of subscriptions who text that number.

How fast does the SIM card get delivered for Hello Mobile? Do they FedEx it or does it take a more than a week?
Have 2 lines, both times it was about a week to get a SIM.

They also have eSIM but sometimes it's available and sometimes it's not

Yes. So far that is how it has worked. I leave the phone in the car for use as a GPS. If I want to use that phone number to text, I just bring up the TextNow web interface from my PC.
