A new 182x+ is over due. Hopefully a new 1824+ or 1825+ will be announced soon.
I have to commend synology. I bought mine in 2018, and it's still going strong, no issues. Probably the longest running electronic I have at this point (has survived several computer upgrades, a few TV's, microwaves, two mesh router systems, three robot vacuums, and lots of other misc). Maybe electronics are just made poorly these days, but my Synollgy NAS keeps chugging along.
I just wish it had the Intel processors to transcode on Plex better.

I love my Roku and don't want to have to run a separate second computer just for Plex.

It's not, they're just suggesting that everyone who uses Plex fills it with pirated media. They don't, and some people even use it for that godforsaken commercial filled TV service they run through it. Some people use it like a DVR for their OTA antennas with a home run or similar hardware.

It's not all piracy.

I mean it's a LOT, but it's not all
Hmm..I'll just chalk up his inane scree to being authored by another'woke scold'...

Synology will always have my money. They simply make good products that last. My original 2-Bay NAS lasted me nearly a decade and now has a new owner. My 4-bay will be lasting my awhile.

Just hit my 1521+ last month.
FWIW, Synology was zero help.

or are they still have issues with the 5 bays only?

Sigh. For the uninitiated, everyone on here who is talking about this "Plex" thing is pretty much speaking in code for [not saying the actual word so it doesn't auto-block my post] "sailing the high seas". You know, an unaffiliated maritime scoundrel with scurvy, but with someone else's media & entertainment products.

These folks use a lot of circular and backwards logic to justify what they're doing, but it all comes down to a simple fact -- it's not legal.
Absolutely nothing illegal about using plex.

No,This is on much older machines. The model he mentioned doesn't even exist. 2015 I think.
Leave sour puss alone I guess.

My 1618+ hasn't skipped a beat. These machines are not cheap but they just work.

I've got QNAP since 2017 still working awesome. I did get Synology last year because I wanted the software functionality of Synology. But in terms of reliability even QNAP has been good for me.

Completely false. I have Plex lifetime; with this and a digital tuner/antenna, I have a completely legal, zero percent piracy related DVR that I have full control over. Just because something has a use, doesn't mean everyone using it is using it for that use.

I use it for my photography. Works fine with my photos and 4k videos. I'm not sure why it is assumed everyone uses Plex for illegal things. It is fabulous to show my clients some of the work in progress right from my phone. No laptop, no thumb drives, no blah blah. Just a phone, an app, and an internet connection. If I tried to store all that on my phone, well…… I couldn't as they don't make that kind of phone space plus moving the files over the wire to my phone? Just no. You should research ways to use it. Plenty of options. I also share some of my photo collections with family this way. Get out of your bubble, bud.

I have never done NAS and know nothing about it. But I want one and can learn. Anyone recommend a good video that would show how to set this up?

Do you happen know if those Synology branded drive requirements are true requirements or is it just a scary warning that we can ignore/bypass?

I have the same question also. I found a post on Reddit that says you can get around that restriction https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...rd_drives/

Can you share the NIC & memory model # you bought to upgrade your? TIA
I bought the Synology one, ordered it from B&H as far as I recall, same with the memory. There are Reddit posts out there in the Synology subreddit that list both specific memory modules with and what NICs work.

Have you thrown 4K REMUX 10bit files at it? Can you give a little more detail on your use case please? And what hardware did you get specifically? Thanks in advance!
Not sure what details you'd want exactly... All wired via Cat6 Ethernet runs, Ubiquiti gear, end devices are either Shield TV Pro units or Apple TV 4K units.
