Rookie question - but could you use this with a boat rental? Or is it an "install permanently" kind of situation?

Also curious about this. I've never used a fish finder but recently got a kayak for the ocean and was considering one. Are there depth limitations to consider when looking at different fish finders?

You absolutely can. Have to connect to a small battery with a box that can be purchased at Walmart and mount right on top. Keep in mind the transducer has to go in the water for this to work. I used a suction cup from GoPro for easy mounting to the transom of the boat. Box I used https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-.../552980647

This will be more than enough for a kayak. No need to worry about depth. What should be considered is what kind of fish finder you want. A basic one like this or let's say side view which is more advanced and you can track fish that's not just right below the boat. That comes with a nice price tag too so choice is yours.

I had one of these for my jetski and ended up getting another striker (echomap) with GPS navigation. This unit does not have navigation FYI.

How does GPS plotter differ from GPS nav?

actually,... transducers work just fine INSIDE the boat too. the catch is there can be no air* in between. things like kayak work just fine for this.. you can either put the transducer in a zip lock bag of water or equivalent strategy, or use duct putty:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...=UTF8&th=1 . I have done both methods, and they totally have no difference than the transducer being in the water.
Garmin also makes a over priced piece of foam that fits the shape of some hulls.. but honestly the above methods are better.

The plotter records your route but doesn't work as a navigation device. GPS navigation will show your position on a map and help you get to your destination, which isn't on this unit.

Look up Scotty Kayak/SUP Transducer Arm (140 or 141) and see if you could temporarily mount that somewhere on the boat you intend to rent. Maybe install the track on a board that is then clamped to the transom?
I use that mount to move this fish finder between a kayak, boat, and a battery box (for ice fishing).

I have been using this fish finder for a few years now in the summer and winter and it works good.

I would also recommend getting a "case" for this. They make a case like you would put on your cell phone, but it covers the front of the unit instead of the back to protect the screen when not in use.

The whole purpose of transducer is to scan for fish in the water as well as rocks and structures under the boat. What you going to be scanning inside the ziplock bag is not clear to me lol

The transducer scans through the hull of the kayak, not just in the bag.

I've thoroughly enjoyed using my Deeper Smart Sonar PRO+ [deepersonar.com] - no transducers to have to mess with, and it seems to work well over the years that I've used their finders. I have it tied on 50# line to a Zebco 888, and I can cast it anywhere if I'm fishing on the bank of a pond, or I can let it go behind me if I'm in a boat or kayak.
