Previously I also did a lot of Metro and Tracfone deals to give to friends and family.

That said I have been burnt enough times and learnt the hard way to stay away from them. At least with Metro the system rejects orders beforehand. With Tracfone the issues happen after you get the phone…if something goes wrong in activation the customer service outrigjt lies and wastes your time .
I saw quite a few comments on "unlocked automatically after 60 days"
That was NOT my case a few months ago, I needed to talk to CSR for unlocking.
I had this phone for about 5 months. The battery sucks, the SOT was about 4 hours on a full charge, and AccuBattery estimated it even lower. The phone heated a lot. Both issues should be caused by Samsung's in house 1380 chipset (fabricated by Samsung as well). I had a OnePlus Nord 20 at the same price range that lasted about 11- 12 hours SOT on a full charge without heating issues.

The camera is good but not splendid. The screen looks good but has lagged touch register/none-register issue. Overall this phone is buggy and not worth the MSRP of $699. $100 seems like a fair price if you don't have other choice.

For a phone made for TF and their sister companies, the SIM number is paired to the phone's IMEI in their system. If you take a SIM from TF-branded phone A and put it into TF-branded phone B, it'll displace and purge the original SIM of phone B from their system. There are a variety of scenarios and TF doesn't do things CONSISTENTLY. It's best to use the appropriate SIM (BYOP SIM for BYOP phone and original SIM for TF-branded phone), then transfer service from one phone to another.
Thanks, I do have a BYOP SIM. I'm presuming that once the A54 device is unlocked, there should be no problem with using that SIM, right? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying? In this case, the A54 would be TF Phone B, and I don't care what happens to the SIM that came with the phone. I just want to make sure that the A54 doesn't somehow get relocked/re-paired to the BYOP SIM.

In the past, TFW has required a new sim if transferring service, Verizon has always tied the sim to the phone. Sims are $1 at many places and you can transfer to the new sim online. Some have swapped sims to different with no problem,, others have had problems. They can detect it, whether they do anything about it is a guess. The phone will unlock after activated with the correct sim, you're on your own if you swap the sim.
So you're saying the safest option would be to buy a new BYOP sim and transfer the service to that sim?

Would this be the case if my TF service is already using a BYOP sim in my non-TF device? I've been using it that way for about a year, and if I recall I swapped it from a couple of older TF devices that I've since turned into WiFi-only. I originally got that SIM for an older unlocked T-mobile phone, then swapped it into the unlocked TF phones, then swapped it into a newer BYOP device.

I just want to make sure I do this right because I've got ~3000 days of service remaining on that SIM.

When you activate a BYOP SIM, TF system will ask for the IMEI of the phone. If you give it the IMEI of the Total A54, it might give you an error and tell you to call C.S. because it's a "branded" phone. I'd try transferring to the A54 using its original Total SIM by (re)activating the A54 on TF web site (not Total web site) and select Keep My Phone Number then select the phone number tied to your phone on TF.

When?
  1. While Total service is still active (<30days)? or
  2. After Total service expires but before unlock (31-60 days)? or
  3. After unlock (>61 days)?

The original question from peter was doing after the A54 has been unlocked. But to answer your questions, I wouldn't do it within the first 30 days. Doing it between 31-60 might muddy up the water if Total doesn't unlock the phone. Do it after 60 days and you'll know for sure that doing that did not affect the unlocking.

Phone came in today, ported in with a different number than I first put in. I was able to order another phone for $80 plus tax since I only had to pay $30 for the service since it's a second line.

Did you have to supply another number for porting? Where did you get that number?

I used my main ATT number to do the verification. I didn't have to do the ID check again since I guess it was still valid from the first order. I use numberbarn to buy numbers, they're usually $5 plus a $2 monthly fee if you don't port it out in a month.
