thats new normal price, when back to school sale going on, it will be 200 dollar discounted.

2024 people cant adjust 1000 dollar price tag for 8+256 combo anymore

Unless you plan on using this for the lightest of light computing tasks, I wouldn't recommend any Mac or PC without at least 16GB of RAM.

I'm not convinced that is true of Windows, even less certain with Mac, with the exception of gaming, or video editing.

No it's pretty true. On a Mac, the Mac you buy with 8GB of RAM is not user upgradable, nothing on the macs are user upgradeable, and that is set to become significantly more common on PC as computer manufacturers build and release Windows devices that run on ARM. Whatever system that you get with a SOC setup, you're stuck with for the lifetime of the computer now.

There have been significant complaints about both Mac's and PC's from reviewers and users about how performant an 8GB systems are, also the question of future proofing, and in SOC systems the question of upgradability. I haven't seen anyone actually recommend 8GB as good for anything other than light browsing and checking your mail in quite some time.
