This is the video tgeenyc mentioned (Project Farm is awesome by the way). Long story short it's significantly worse than VHB at almost double the cost, and there's also a 3m knockoff called LLPT that's almost as good as 3m at a fraction of even that price.

Personally 3m VHB has definitely won me over from years of just working, but I might try the LLPT (I hadn't actually seen this video before, which is funny because I've seen a ton of project farm videos and use VHB all the time). There's also some weird clear tape that's known by "Alien Tape" or otherwise usually has the words nano and gel in the product name. That stuff is really good for light to medium duty where you're especially concerned about damaging surfaces.

Hope this helps

I looked up alien tape - says not good for painted surfaces. Any recommendations ? We have a solid wood painted dresser I want to mount a basket to the side of for my kids changing table

Any strong adhesive is not really going to be truly "paint safe" but in my experience as long as you remove that nano tape carefully (peel it back) I've never had a problem.

Some kind of 3m command strips might work depending on how strong you need it to be but I've definitely had those things pull paint off as well. Might make more sense to just put a small screw or two in it in your case, it is 100% going to damage, but at least very small damage.

I second this. Vhb 3m tape never disappoints. But remember it is as good as the surface as you are putting it on. If it is loose paint/stucco etc then it won't work well. But nothing will. Gorilla tape is just marketing
