500 Joules protection seems low for major appliances

It should. It's a 14 awg that's only 15 ft long. if you using 1k watts or less it's fine. 1800Watts is the max draw. so it should be safe to draw 1400 - 1500 watts.

Mine just arrived. It's worth 7 bucks, and not much more, but mainly for the 15 foot cord.

It seems really cheap and flimsy. Lots of plastic, the only part that is metal is the red cover, and it is really thin gauge metal.

This is more like a cheap plastic power bar, with the top covered with a paper thin piece of red sheet metal. And the hole that seems like a great idea to hang it is really flimsy plastic that seems like it would break really easily.

Okay for light duty use by a casual homeowner. But not going to be rugged enough for someone that is going to put it through heavy garage use. Look elsewhere if you are a serious do-it-yourselfer in the garage, this surge protector isn't for you. Won't last a month under heavy use.

Don't worry, so-called 'surge protectors' are useless anyway for anybody.

I went to my local store and they had two on the shelf. So I took them to self checkout and they scanned at $22.24. I asked the attendant if they could match the online price. She called the manager and he came and adjusted the price to $7. I was surprised that they did the match. But I think the fact that it was Tuesday night and the store was dead worked in my favor.

Instead of calling this thing "Hyper Tough"/"Metal", they should call it "Super Wimpy"/"Plastic", with a paper thin metal face wrap.
