My job as a parent is to raise my children into healthy independent adults. I started learning to chop and cook at 5. It is a fundamental life skill that a disappointing number of adults never learn. I assure you it is 5x the work to walk your kids through making something step by step compared with doing something yourself. It is quite the opposite of lazy, it is real parenting.

What a ridiculous comment. My kid enjoys helping in the kitchen and loves chopping veggies etc. Has nothing to do with lazy.

You took the words out of my mouth. The lazy way is to quickly prepare something vs helping them learn and patiently watching as they struggle and make mistakes as you monitor, correct, teach and encourage. Would love to see the meals that our friend above prepares for his/her kids 🤣. I'm sure it involves lots of chopping, prep work and very healthy for the kids 👍 🔪

What kind of kid needs a chef's knife? Cook for your kids. They don't need to learn how to cook. They are kids. Lazy parents
Tell me you don't have kids without telling me you don't have kids

Ok, I gotta ask - because I got my kid a set of plastic kitchen knives like these:
https://www.amazon.com/Tovla-Kniv...B0751JFFYY

Why would I want this Zwilling knife over the plastic set (which my kiddo can do everything they show on the sale page)? And make no mistake, I am a Zwilling knife guy, I just don't see a difference, except in cost.

I had a set like that and returned them because for some cutting, I felt they kind of chewed things up instead of smooth slicing. For example, my child can shred lettuce neatly with the Zwilling, and I really like the finger guard piece. Perhaps the Zwilling for a slightly older age?

Same. The plastic is not very sharp or smooth, so you get very rough cuts. I guess it's not even good for teaching as the technique is more like using a saw than a knife.

One gripe I have is that proper knife usage has you pinch the bottom of the blade with your thumb and index finger. (At least, that's what I've seen from professionals)

Both this knife and the Ikea variants have thick plastic guards at the top of the handles that might block kids from doing that. Can anyone comment if those guards do prevent kids from pinching the blade, or make it uncomfortable to do so?

Pffft, if your kid doesn't know how to use a table saw by the time they are 3 years old you're a bad parent.

Any time he/she can start holding it…and you can start with something easy like cookie dough.
My grandchildren have been using them since 18 months.

Agreed! When we go out to eat and they find something they really like we learn to make it at home. Improve the recipe and make it better. Like Benihana fried rice. Stated making it at home and now it tastes so much better that we can't even eat it at the restaurant because it's so bland. It's a great way to teach the kids to learn to cook. And get them interested in cooking at home.

Not bad for $12. Definitely nicer than any plastic/ceramic/toy knife you'll get for the price.

I'd consider getting a cutting glove rather than using a finger guard but at least it's useful for safe storage if needed.

So …. How about know your kids and proceed accordingly.

Some kids will be adept enough for adult knives and others shouldn't be within ten feet of any knife.

This is not a one size fits all product.

This is dumb.
Just teach them how to use knives. My daughter has been using REAL knives all her life.
after she became familiar with REAL bread/butter knife,
Moved on to Professional S steak knives (about 3.5 years old).
then moved onto all other knives including 8inch chefs and serrated etc.

Last year at 25...she cut her finger with a Milwaukee Utility knife. Had to get a couple stitches and laughed.
bro no one cares about your parenting, buy the item or don't.
