I bought 2 already so I know it works.
NYC's utility is incentivizing switching from gas to electric heat pump water heaters by giving a $1000 instant rebate when purchasing IN-STORE as a special order for the coupon to be applied.

Performance Platinum 65 Gal. 10-Year $1639.99 (It went as low as $1539.99).

ProTerra 65 Gal. 10-Year Hybrid High Efficiency Smart Tank Electric Water Heater with Leak Detection & Auto Shutoff
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312741454

Also works on the Proterra (leak detection & auto shutoff version) and the other sizes but best when these are having a sale.
Shipped to store is free, delivery to your house is $79 extra + tax.

Program and participating stores:
https://www.coned.com/en/save-mon...r-and-save

$1000 instant rebate (must be a ConEd customers):
https://coned.instant-rebates.com/

Performance platinum 65 gallons
$1639.99 - $1000 = $639.99 + ny tax = $696.79 Shipped to store
Proterra 65 gallons
$1899.99 - $1000 = 899.99 + NY tax = $979.86 shipped to store

You also get 30% from the federal tax credit

It also should work on the AO smith version for Lowe's but I didn't try that.

If you didn't already have an electric water heater, you likely might not buy this, even though it might make sense, which your comment does not!

I have a 30 year old gas ruud with the pilot light. Had a power outage last night. Went out to hot water heater turn the temperture up until the burner came on. I'm not sure you can find one like that anymore.

Would like to chime in as someone who has a lot of experience with plumbing applications and appliance repair.

Yes, these are loud. They have compressors that kick on frequently when hot water is being used or hot water supply needs to be refilled.

The need 80sqft of space to work properly (~10'x8'). You can not put them in a small closet unless you duct them to the outside.

They will make whatever room you put them in cold.

Econet app is garbage. I haven't been able to get two separate accounts tied to a single unit but they may have fixed that.

Rheems warranty doesn't cover labor and sensors on them frequently go bad (Google bad evap sensor code A005). If a sensor goes bad you will only be able to use full electric mode.

Sensors are plug and play and Rheem will send you new ones but depending on how yours is wired/plumbed it could be difficult to access inside the unit.

Lastly, you will most likely need a pump for the condensate line if you don't have a drain accessible

That being said, they are good tech but not for everyone

I have the 80 gallon. Had to get it replaced after 5 or 6 warranty service issues. Heat Pump was basically broken on delivery. "Energy Saver" mode also is not very good. Basically never refills the tank.

These water heaters are not figured out yet, I'm all for it working but they are using the consumer as the guinea pig.....I thought I was doing the right thing getting one of these (different manufacturer but read up.....all the same issues....) the heat pump failed in less than a year on mine, there are folks that are on their 3rd replacement of these units within a few years.....they are not ready for the real world.

I live in Maryland. Can I buy it online and pick it up at a NY store to get this deal?

no. online purchases are not eligible for the con ed discount. you also need to be a con ed customer to get the rebate.

Nice if you have it. Natural gas is a city/suburb thing. I have a well pump and even lose water when power goes out. Easy to prepare for though.

I'm on my third one. So far average about 13 months each. Great 10 year warranty if you don't mind phones calls to support, getting an RMA and uninstalling and returning it to the store and then installing the new one again. That being said. I'm still not going back to pure electric just yet.

I have a gas tankless that needs a 120vac supply to run it. But that's just for igniting and modulating the gas and water valve. It apparently doesn't require much electricity because during my last power outage I went to Best Buy and picked up a UPS. Plugged in the water heater and I was able to get 8 five minute showers and then the power came back on. Not sure how much run time was left in the ups. But it got me hot water when I needed it. In a worse case scenario I could just take the ups somewhere and charge it up and take it back home.

For myself, I went to the one at Woodhaven. Go to the Pro services or customer service desk and ask that you want to make a special order and have an instant rebate code.
Did they sell it to you for the sales price then deducted the $1000 discount after?

I'll take a basic tank any day. Very few things to break. No thanks on an over complicated water heater.

I have the 80gal version for about a year now in Ohio. I haven't had any major issues and wouldn't hesitate to buy again. The schedule is weird at first but running great after we figured it out.
It definitely lowered our electric bill!
