This is still working, albeit not as easy as it used to be. I'll add my steps in case it helps anyone. Note: Some of these steps can likely be done earlier than I did them. I ordered the phone on 8/19 and received today (8/21).

Day 1

Purchased phone on Walmart's website. Note email address used, phone number, and PIN.
Downloaded the two agreement PDFs during checkout. The Loan Agreement doc has the Verizon phone number information.
Received an email from Verizon later that day. "Your account email address has been updated."

Day 2

Registered a new account on Verizon.com under Mobile & 5G Home using the same Walmart.com purchase email.
Added the new phone to my newly created Verizon account using the phone number from the agreement and the PIN used during Walmart checkout.
Verified my account email and my "daily driver" phone number.
Installed the My Verizon mobile app on my daily driver phone and logged in. Neither the app nor chat would allow me to pay off my device.

Day 3

Tried to pay off device

The local Verizon store would not allow me to pay off my device. They sent a text to the device to "authenticate me". After explaining I didn't bring the device, he said the device couldn't be paid off for 30 days.
Left the store and Immediately added a credit card payment method in the My Verizon app.
Immediately called 800-837-4966 (Verizon Support number), enter the phone number/pin set up during checkout. Said "pay off device", automatic system read the phone number back to me, told me how much I owe, and asked if I wanted to use the card on my account. Said "yes". Received email confirmation of device payoff.

Went to the Verizon Chat to cancel the service. They originally asked if I wanted to end it after the current cycle. I asked to end the service effective today. It took some convincing for the rep to comply, but they ultimately did.
Phone finally arrived by FedEx. Inserted an H2O sim from Target for $1 before turning on the device the first time.
Put the sim in the phone and went to https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and click "start an unlock request" then follow the prompt to unlock the phone. Confirm the AT&T unlock request in your email. The approval came minutes after I clicked submit.
Confirmed unlock status at sickw.com

Thank you to all those before me that posted experiences and steps you took. I could not have pieced this all together without your comments.

T-Mobile no longer takes as trade in for top tier. Only reason why many bought the last time

Same $99. price with verification at Total by Verizon so no credit inquiry. Yes, after unlock (60 days) it works on every US carrier and most of the world's networks too. It's an auto unlock so no need to contact them. If you don' t want to pay the second month before the unlock, some say no need to buy the second month's plan. I elected to drop down to Total's unadvertised talk and text plan (no data) for $10. to make sure. I had the SE2 and the added 5G is added bonus with speed and coverage. I still have an old 5S and that thing runs like new with getting 4G/LTE. Build quality and design on the 5S is impressive.

3 days has always been from when Walmart sets it up and ships it.
In some cases, the day you order it may not be the same as the day they ship it to you.

Basically Day 1 is the day Walmart signs you up for Verizon service which lines up with the day they ship it to you.

Your timer runs while it is in transit. If there are shipping delays, it'll be on you.
Are you 100% sure? Cuz it seems like it would be 3 days from you activating the phone (per the Verizon return policy [verizon.com]: "You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within 3 days of activation."

I've no experience in this, just kinda puzzling that you'd be stuck with the fee if the phone was stuck in transit and paying for the plan.

It's from the moment you order. I'm 100% certain as other deals such as the Samsung A42 or A14 many of us have done and ran into this BS of not receiving the phone for 5 days from Walmart and then having to fight with Verizon reps over 5 days of service and a $35 activation fee. Just search other Verizon Walmart phone deal threads and you'll see.

Thanks for the tip on searching other threads. Found this relevant one with specific steps to follow (though the poster suggests it's 3 days from receiving & activating, not ordering; the other steps are very clear):
Quote :
1) Pay off the phone with Cash, at a Verizon Corporate store. Will not work at other types of Verizon stores, and I don't know if you can use card. When you get the phone, and sign into your account, it will tell you you need to wait to be able to pay it off online, or you can go into the store and pay it off with "cash". Didn't bother trying with card, so can't say for sure if card/Apple Pay will work, but I doubt it.

2) Correct. Activation begins when you turn on the phone. It will go through the automatic activation during setup.

3) Correct process. except I cancelled via chat because was too socially anxious to do it in person after paying off my brand new phone for super cheap haha (the person who helped me looked surprised how little I had to pay) I also did chat so that I can screenshot the conversation where I double confirmed that I wanted to cancel the line *immediately* (not at the end of the current month/period... It should be pretty instant to confirm) and that since it was within 3 days, I would get activation fee waived.
That said, lots of posters on reddit report that Verizon Store employees have been known to reject attempts to pay off the phone in first 30 days.

I ordered an A42 in April and received it 4 days later. My first bill from Verizon was $128 (I managed to pay off the phone using a nonrep method the day I received the phone, it was a dollar a month for 36 months). I had to call time three times over the course of a week to finally get the issue solved. The first time I called the rep agreed to waive the fee and prorate my bill based on the 4 days of service. The new bill came as $60. So I had to call again about the activation fee still being there. The rep agreed again to waive the fee, but a few days later I check my account and I still owe $60ish. Finally on the third call and state it to the rep as I had the phone one day do you think $60 for one day of having the phone is fair? The rep this time managed to refund me for the entire $60. A few weeks later I get an email from Verizon that I'm getting $8 refund now. So be warned nobody knows WTF is going on at Verizon and you could get a rep that won't waive the fee since it's over three days or get one that will. It's a lot of work and risk that can backfire.

Update from me:
  1. Ordered from Walmart.com yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm, was promised delivery of phone: Tuesday.
  2. At 4am today, received an email from Verizon that my account email was updated (using the email address I specified when placing the order). Also see on Walmart that the phone was shipped around the same time via FedEx.
  3. At 7am, I saw the email and signed up for a new MyVerizon account on their website. Site asked me for the email (supplied above), phone number (shown as "BORROWER'S PHONE NUMBER" in installment loan agreement provided after purchasing from walmart.com), and PIN. I successfully created a new account (without having received a phone yet). I then added a credit card to the payment methods on the account.
  4. At 8:40am, I called the CS number (800-922-0204, authenticated with phone number and PIN) and said "pay off device." After approving via voice prompt, my credit charged was charged $99.
My phone shows up under my devices in Account details on verizon.com. I got the IMEI (listed as IMEI2) off that listing, and plugged into sickw.com IMEI check (real #'s X'ed out):
Quote :
SICKW.COM IMEI Check

Demo Unit: No
Loaner Device: No
Replaced Device: No
Replacement Device: No
Refurbished Device: No

Next steps:
  1. Wait for phone to arrive (tomorrow)
  2. Make a call, send a text
  3. Cancel service via CS phone.
  4. Wait 2 months for phone to unlock.
Am I missing anything? Hope this is helpful to someone.

Wanted to close the loop.

I got antsy & impatient cuz FedEx was not showing the phone received (was nervous it was delayed and wouldn't arrive within 3 days), so last night (Mon) decided to go ahead and cancel service since it was already activated per Verizon's site (via the esim). This after paying off the phone in the morning, but without having received it.

So here's the happy second half of the story:
  1. Monday night (before receiving phone, after confirming it was activated): Cancelled service using 'chat' feature on Verizon website ("Disconnect Line" option in Device page only sets up 'pending' disconnect, I had to actually chat with a live agent) -- Mon 10:40pm. Effectively cancelled service on the same day as it was activated per Verizon's records.
  2. Received phone this afternoon (after FedEx's tracking caught up)
  3. Battery was discharged, so had to charge it first.
  4. Put in an inactive RedPocket GSMA prepaid SIM, powered on.
  5. Set up manually, with WiFi, activated (with Apple). In Settings -> General -> About -> Carrier Lock -> SIM locked.
  6. Went thru AT&T unlock process to unlock the phone, showed status Approved just a few moments later.
  7. Reset the phone (Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset -> Reset All Settings)
  8. Now Carrier Lock shows "No SIM restrictions".

SICKW.com agrees:

Very satisfied. Thank you to all who made this possible in this thread. May it help someone else score a deal. woot

How much did you end up paying for the phone including plan fees?

I ended up having to call Verizon customer service to get them to fully credit/refund all charges on the plan. This afternoon, 24 hours after canceling the line, their systems showed I owed them $84.54 (i.e., $75 monthly plan plus surcharges/fees). They'd properly credited the activation fee, but messed up the cost of the plan itself.

I called CS, telling them the line hadn't been active for even 24 hours, and they corrected it, and now I owe Verizon nothing.

Final cost to me (other than time) is just that of the phone: $99 (to Verizon) plus sales tax (to Walmart).

I received my device within 2 days. I am not sure how do I get my phone number to be able to register and pay off the device without activating the device. Any tips?

I was able to activate the phone, get the phone number, login to Verion, add payment method, pay off phone via calling and authenticating, cancel via live agent. Will wait for the bill to come and confirm that the activation charges have been removed.
