I have this exact hatchet. It's great for making small pieces of tinder for fires from logs.

Had it for years and use it occasionally. It has kept it's sharp edge for the most part.

Would purchase again.

My wife almost lost her finger a couple years ago due to this hatchet. Granted, I do sharpen it here and there. She was cutting some kindling and welp, ended up in the ER for some stitches and loss of feeling in her index finger. (not saying this is the fault of the hatchet, trying to say this thing is SHARP!)

Great hatchet. Got one for kindling and another in my camping kit. Keep the little blade cover it comes with or buy a sheath. Great buy and tempted to grab a third to have in my emergency kit in the pickup truck

Good find. After reading some reviews I'm going with the black handled one from target. Looks nicer, a little lighter and people say it chops just as well.

Video comparison shows both are very similar. I'm inclined to go with black one as well. Thanks

That has nothing to do with the Axe, she could have been using a spork or a rock and ended up in the same ER. Now if the Axe head split and metal pieces went into her hand, that is a different story. But if she slammed the axe and missed and hit the piece of wood with the handle and that broke into pieces, is still user error and the the axes fault.

I have a hammer where the handle is splitting at the base. One hard hit and that hammer head will be flying into my forehead or the closest window. I secured it with some duck tape. But everytime i reach for that hammer i'm assuming any day now. I'm also not going to blame the hammer for when that day comes.

I have the larger Axe size of this, and it's been great. I love that it comes in it's own wall mount (this one comes with a "sheath" which is like a carry handle I guess).

the axe was once this price several years ago and I am still kicking myself to this day for missing out on it

it's been sitting in my amazon cart for years now lol

Hatchet, yes, but if I were just getting one, I'd grab a slightly longer camping axe (~16-20"). It's small enough for one handed use, but big enough for two handed use.

Fiskars used to make the axes for Gerber. I don't know if they still do.

Harbor Freight actually sells a well regarded hatchet with a more ergonomic handle:

If you do want to go one handed shorty, the IsoCore Maul has the power for splitting, can cut kindling (although some compromise), and hammers.

Great post thanks. Like the saw in the handle of the Gerber.

She learned her lesson and is more careful, but definitely still uses it, lol

I'm not saying her ER trip is the fault of the hatchet, at all. I was trying to explain that it's a nice sharp hatchet that will absolutely cut your finger off if you're not careful, lol. Love this hatchet! She could have done a hundred different things to avoid the accident, but it's not something she does often and she got caught slipping unfortunately.

This is the review worth reading that compares the two:

i have MANY fiskars products multiple axes and splitters , pole saw , clippers , loppers and enjoy them all . X7 no exception . i LOST 2 , x7 so this is replacement . the ONLY complaint is this X7 doesnt have the silicone laminated grip as the old X7s , but still , good leather gloves and wont know the difference ..... as sharp as these are , the plastic cover is a GREAT thing , easy off/on
Looking at the pictures, this is obvious. The x7 has a silicone grip, the one at target, is just plastic. I'll spend more for the grip.

Ah gotcha, sometimes with personal stories allot of reviewers tend to blame or imply some fault with the product. While hiding user missteps or things that absolutely had nothing to do with the item itself.

With that said as someone else pointed out in the thread. This axe and the target axe (just picked mine up for under $20) are very similar. However the Target has a full plastic handle, while the OPs one has a sillicone grip.

I like the extra grip for safety but they usually tend to collect allot of dirt and grime and after some use begin to looking tathered. Smoth plastic will last longer in appearance but does slip when wet.

Will i kick my self for being a cheapskake for not spending the extra $6.xx? Most likely but i already have the Target axe in my hands while i can still cancell the Amazon order, oh well.

They make a medical product called Coban. Buy a roll and wrap some around anything with a handle you don't like. Stuff is incredible, made my cheap 5 pound mallet from Harbor Freight feel like a 30 dollar Estwing.
