Bit retention; I've gotten away with the setup you mentioned, but I've also dropped bits.. even tried a magnet, (and felt like I had life-hacked) but it kept pulling into other things

This review https://www.amazon.com/gp/custome...5WSDU5XTTW says "... it uses a captured ball bearing and spring to hold the bit in place ...", which sounds like an improvement over using a plain socket.

For the occasional use, can't you just use a 1/4 hex socket?

Thanks OP! In for one. As an aircraft mechanic I often find myself in weird scenarios where this tool would be extremely helpful. I've often tried using the 1/4" socket method and end up searching for the bit for an unreasonable amount of time. Might not need it all the time, but when I do, I'll be glad I got it.

Ok price for one but if you want to stock up this is one of those packaging and shipping make multiples much cheaper per unit things on Amazon.

You can, but most likely your bits will fall out immediately.

This one is slightly more expensive but works extremely well. It uses a retention ring and a magnet. It also has a tapered design that may help in tighter areas. I'm very happy with the one I received.

I have that and the Gedore that OP posted. Both are equally good and a great must-have's to go with the 1/4" driver handles such as these https://a.co/d/5NnS9LY

This has the ball bearing so it holds it in the socket. Ive used a 1/4 socket, problem is when flipped it will sometimes drop the bit.
Electrical tape the bit/socket in for tough spaces. Works well.
