Was looking for a bit more jump in FPS and better 1% lows (this checked out). But after going through the games I play (an assortment of single player and multi-player games), I just concluded the "upgrade" wasn't big enough to justify plunging $200+ bucks. I only game on my desktop, so the additional cores were nice but not needed.

It's also good to test if you have the time and energy but I don't think it was going to give you a good boost at 4K.

Making a statement of how much you can improve from a cpu based on resolution makes far less sense than a gpu. GPU load matters far more than your resolution. You can benefit a ton from 4K on valorant vs 4K on COD. Making a resolution distinction for GPU made sense in the case of the 4060 base and Ti because of a specific bottleneck within that GPU that made it perform worse than the 3060, even though the 4060 is by all accounts, faster than the 3060.

I did a comparison between my 5600 vs 5700x3d. @4k the only thing that really benefits is my 1% lows in games. The FPS is only a few frames lower.

I ended up returning the 5700x3d.
1% Lows are pretty awful in PC Gaming in general, though. The amount of stuttering that, at least, I get, are very unenjoyable to deal with. My upgrade from 3800X to 5700X3D is great.

Thermalright makes some really good budget coolers that go for under $20 on Amazon.

This one has five heatpipes: Thermalright Assassin King 12 SE $16.99 [amazon.com] or one with ARGB fan for $0.60 more.
I considered that one but am going with this Noctua [amazon.com] instead because I would rather buy Taiwanese manufactured than Chinese. Plus the Noctua supports AM5 in case I want to upgrade.

Apparently there can be a TPM error problem [amd.com] when upgrading to X3D CPU's. Before upgrading it looks to be a good idea to turn off certain encryption settings in Windows and the BIOS and then reenabling them after upgrading in order to avoid this possible error that is otherwise unfixable even with an OS reinstall or BIOS reset.

You do pay more, but I can say I've never had buyer's remorse or otherwise felt I got screwed with Noctua. Tho you should've spent the extra ten for a kit [amazon.com] with a second fan - you're gonna feel that one later.

Also, looking for a reason to try out something from Thermalright just to see if the hype is true (too many great user impressions to ignore, especially for the price).

1% lows are awful, but a playing at 4K has less egregious 1% lows. The CPU isn't even taxed for the typical game around 4k 60fps, so it has a lot more headroom for a burst of CPU usage that would normally cause a stutter. Otherwise, 1% lows are super noticeable if you're playing like 144hz+ and the CPU is already pretty much maxed out.

I assume a single fan is enough. 5700x3d is only a 105W TDP part and only boosts to 4.1GHz. I assume a higher clocked CPU, especially certain Intel models, might benefit but not this. Plus this can't be overclocked as motherboard BIOS's disable it since the cache die can be damaged easily and is the limiting factor. A second fan would only allow for lower noise but I doubt I'll ever notice even if I had low noise GPU. If I'm wrong or change my mind the second fan is only $17.

I will be using this exclusively for VR on a Quest 3 at 4K. Does the x3d help here or OK to go with a more affordable AM4 CPU?
