That's a great price for an I3 laptop with 1080p screen, in before shrewd with their pitch fork complaining about non IPS, dim screen, non backlit keyboard blah blah blah.

Is 8 GB of RAM enough for programming?
There's a 1x SO-DIMM for you to add another stick of RAM, if you add a 16Gb RAM module, you can have 24Gb, and that should be enough for most.
Agreed. Windows 11 uses about 5 GB ram on a 16gb-ram machine. If you can install Linux on this machine (arch + plasma 6 is very good and uses only about 1.6GB ram), then you can do a lot of programming with 8 gb ram.

I got the Microcenter Asus vivobook deal for 299 that had the larger 1920x1200 400nits screen. It is good. RAM upgraded to 20GB.

Note that everything Asus installs an Asus service and junk software out of the box unless you turn off the BIOS options. Search for "uninstall Armoury Crate". Turn it off in the BIOS and remove all asus software.

It installs even with a clean Windows install after an FDISK of the drive unless you disable in the BIOS. And.... every BIOS update requires disabling the option. It's almost like Asus wants you to run their software... feels very malware like in action.

Good PCs other than that.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank BlueDesk9616

The 1215U is no slouch for a bargain basement machine. In single threaded performance it beats my MacBook Pro 2019 with i9 processor. It loses in multicore (6 vs 8 cores after all, and 4 of 6 are efficiency cores) but does not lose by as much as you might think.

Best value notebook I've ever seen right here.

Grabbed an excellent condition open box for 200. Can't beat that honestly, oft an i3 that runs circles around an i5 from 5 years ago. I'll throw another 8gb in for 30 bucks and call it a day

Then if it was gold plated they'd complain the composition of the gold (alloy) wasn't the perfect blend (knife threads....looking at you Wink )

If your 6th grader is a gamer (like my teens and pre-teens are), you aren't going to give this a serious thought...because that's not what it's built for.

If you just need an extra terminal at the house for kids to do things like school work, this is perfect for that kind of thing!
my kid has a switch... but she also has a chromebook... and that seems adequate for school work... I guess i will wait and see.

You'll need to replace the WiFi card for it to work with Linux, but agreed, Linux all the way on this for me.

The microcenter site says 12gb max, was that a typo?

I went down and looked at in person and the screen is really bad looking.

Otherwise seems really great for the price.

I looked at a different cheap laptop, like $379 that had an IPS screen and it was much better - but also more expensive. I'll hold off until one with a better screen gets near this price.

Picked one of these up for my granddaughter. I wish the screen was an IPS, but it's decent if not viewed from sharp angles. When I was setting it up I noticed it was somewhat sluggish. I knew that only having 8gb RAM, it would need an upgrade, but just navigating Windows was a bit pokey.

I downloaded Crystal diskmark and found that the cheap generic 128gb NVMe drive was probably the culprit. Speeds were 696/112 Mbps. I'd already ordered a 8gb stick to upgrade to 16GB, and I also had a gen 3 NVMe WD SN570 sitting around unused, so I installed that today at the same time I upgraded the ram. Simple install.

That did the trick. The speeds are now 3287/2733 Mbps and between that upgrade and going to 16 GB, the system runs very crisply now even with a bunch of programs open. One more thing you will probably also want to do, is disable S Mode under the activation tab in the settings. I still think this is a pretty good deal as long as you upgrade to a faster SSD, and for under $20 the ram upgrade also makes sense.
