EXCELLENT DEAL! (if you don't need hdmi 2.1, vrr, and 8k support)

i have this, got an awesome deal on it open box at best buy, missing the remote and radio antenna (both cheap to replace for like $10 or something), but also no setup mic (not so cheap to replace) as an upgrade from a tx-nr696, and it's been awesome.

pretty regular firmware updates, no issues to speak of, although i only have it driving a full 5.1.4 setup (sony core fronts/center/sub/atmos and pioneer rears+atmos), plus a dedicated amp off the second sub output, to a couple of bass shakers, and it's been rock solid. only thing i wish it did (not sure if anything else actually does this) is automatically switch inputs when i turn something on (have an xbox one x, series x, and dedicated sony 4k blu-ray player for dolby vision discs). minor niggle, though.

ARC but not eARC, so more limited in codecs and bitrate.

I think the biggest issue in terms of futureproofing isn't 8K but simply not supporting high refresh rates for 4K resolutions. Very tempted to get this since I've been hunting for a cheap 9.2 but I could see this being an issue with future gaming consoles.

Can someone that own these comment or provide a quick review? Mostly using these for watching movie on Netflix YouTube Disney etc.

On a separate note, does upgrading to a mid range speaker like Focal Aria or Kef R11 type of speaker present a major upgrade? Currently running Martin Logan motion 40s w Onkyo NR646. Thanks in advance

A lot of people connect their streaming devices directly to their TV's and use eArc to run audio only to the receiver. For people like that, this seems like a really solid deal.

Didn't realize there was a difference. Good to know even though I generally am not using ARC or eARC

normally i wouldn't feed the trolls, but..not sure how many gamers are really looking for a home theater experience, because that's really the only reason for 8k and vrr at this point, is gaming consoles. this satisfies basically everything else for home media, and is still receiving minor updates. imax enhanced, thx, dts-x, atmos+vision hdr10+/hlg.

i recommend the tx-nr7100 version as an updated version with most of those features, which does go on sale occasionally but roughly 50% more than this, so, kind of moot.

Thanks OP.

This is a great deal. At this price point, no other AVR gives a preout/lineout and dual HDMI outs! Onkyo's sound signature is fantastic in my opinion.

However, I am on the fence whether to upgrade from NR696!
