Pretty neat, I use it when traveling to create my own wifi network* from a hotspot or wifi connection which only allows a single client (in both hotels and in a RV) and my wife ended up using a year straight as a wireless bridge....I guess that is the term, when they sent her home at the start of COVID with a desktop PC. We didn't have ethernet on that side of the house and this ended up working perfectly to extend the wifi yet still allowing that PC's hardwired connection.

Now, I bought it 4 years ago so might be old tech these days.

*bonus points because all your devices recognize this no matter where you go. No need to reconfigure each device each time you get to a new location. In the RV that was a big time saver. Smart TV's connected to this the second I booted it up, just had to connect to a campground wifi or my phone. Hotels also nice because my Steam Deck, tablet, and laptop again connected with no log in changes.

No clue why I am ranting about a mini router.....shake head

No worries, thanks for sharing your use cases.

In the past I used travel routers to create a more secure and stronger Wi-Fi network than the hotel Wi-Fi, using the Ethernet in the hotel room. However, it's unfortunately becoming rare to find Ethernet in newer and remodeled hotel rooms.

Get yourself an used Gl.Inet GL-AR750 instead, they're around the same price, and unlike the WR902AC, it will not be EOLed by OpenWRT after the current release.

They're also selling the GL-SFT1200 at $33, but it'll never get OpenWRT support.
If you don't care about it, then it's a better buy than the WR902AC.

I got these a few years ago for traveling, its quite small and easily put on your pocket and running using a portable battery.
The only downside, it does not let you add any VPN service (OpenVpn or Wireguard), this is just a wireless access port. Now its being use as a wireless repeater at our house. Better get the Gli.net travel routers for a more secured network connectivity when travelling thru airports/hotels.

To connect to airport/hotel or any free hotspot? NO
To use at home? YES
I have multiple TPLink switches and routers, if you are afraid of these being made in China almost all tech hardware is either fully (or partially) manufactured in China or partially made in China, this is how they get the cost down. Heck even super expensive Cisco switches/routers are manufactured in China or somewhere in Asia, Russia, Czech Republic....
If you want a guarantee that your hardware is safe, check out the DOD-approved product list and its vendors.

I got an earlier version of this around 10'ish years ago when I was doing a lot of traveling and backpacking, thinking that it would be useful in hotels and hostels. I never personally found a single instance where it was really needed.

I'm sure there's some people that travel with 8 million devices or some devices that don't support captive portals or whatever so they need this, and it can be a useful wireless bridge in a pinch, but I'd say skip it if you're on the fence unless you have a really specific use case in mind.

TP-Link is famous for downgrading the hardware after initial release.

So you're afraid of Chinaaa(which likely can not walk into your house in the US) but are ok with giving NSA/FBI/CIA/Mossad full access.... DoD has done more spying on the planet than anyone else by farrrr.

Ever notice the people who pound their chests the hardest about such concepts tend to have the largest digital footprint? My coworker thinks he is outsmarting 'the Google,' NSA, China, our work by using DuckDuckGo from his company laptop but he also does stuff like put a photo of his driver's license (DL#, barcodes, and all) on his public Facebook account because he liked the photo so much. E for Effort Wink

I mean, China is a country where you can literally be imprisoned for publishing poems that the leaders don't like, so people who want to hide things from China, especially if they happen to live there themselves or have people they care about who do, are not exactly crazy.

All communist countries are like this. You can't criticize the government/leader/royal members and they can certainly make you regret/disappear to their hearts content. The laws and policies are purposely written to generally take you down for whatever reason they chose.
