False information, the N305 would be just slightly faster than the intel i5-8500. The N100 is only half the speed, but I agree is way more efficient. So I would say this is a good deal because you are getting a lot more expandability. There are 4 ram slots, 1 x 3.5" HDD cage, 1 M.2 SSD slot and 1 x M.2 wifi slot that you install a for wireless. I had purchased 1 from the last deal.

Although you can get a N100 box with a smaller footprint, you may not be able to upgrade the ram or wifi card. I ran into that myself and decided to return it for that reason. I think each has their own strengths.
They're exaggerating a bit.

Most of the N100 boxes are barebones, so you're probably looking at $250 to get it fully running.

Over long term use, though, you're saving a ton on electricity.
You're joking. Passmark has N100 benchmark at 5,550 while a 3ghz i5-8500 is 9,561. The N100 is a lot closer to a i5 4670k that came out over a decade ago. It does use less power than a 8th gen desktop cpu, but it's also much less powerful.

What's wrong with 8th Gen? Isn't performance between 8th and 9th pretty similar?
I can't speak to what Microsoft will do going forward, but currently running an 8th generation i7 in the Dell 7070 UFF on Windows 11 pro, and it works like a champ.

From an IT perspective, don't go below 9th gen for Windows 11 compatibility and don't go i3... ever.
i5 9th gen is cheapest I'd recommend currently.
Why not an 8th gen? I've got a Dell with an i7-8700, and it runs Win 11 no problem. And a recent 13th gen i3 should easily run Win 11.

Oh, I'm about to get flamed for such a dumb question, but, does no WLAN mean no abilty to connect to WiFi? Without tinkering with it?

If so, why would they sell the PCs like this? I've seen it's a common thing to do. A relative once bought a refurb and it could not connect to WiFi. Luckily, he had the option to connectwith cable nearby.

These machines were likely used by businesses that didn't need Wifi, and connected their PCs with an Ethernet cable. You could buy a $10-15 USB Wifi dongle for these PCs.

Does anyone know if AMEX Dell deals trigger for this site? I have a $50 off $100. I'm questioning because the URL is "dellrefurbished" and not something like "refurbished.dell.com" or something.
It's a different website and coded differently. Cashback sites will list different % amounts for dell.com vs dell refurbished as well.

Posted the same question in the other Dell thread. I've been out of the PC game for a long time, >10 years. If I want a PC for some occasional lower-spec gaming, and to host a media server (hosting files on a hard drive, maybe running Plex or Jellyfin or something similar), would any of these cut it for cheap? I have a beefy work PC at home that I can use for most of my day-to-day tasks, so I would only really use this for those 2 things.

These are great for server tasks like proxmox and hosting Plex/Jellyfin with their iGPUs. You'd likely want to get something newer or expandable to fit a GPU for gaming.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'm mostly a console guy at this point, so I'll consider that.

You'll get similar performance to an n100 while drawing 4x more power with these. Meanwhile an n100 is about the same price (or n305 if you want perf for more money)
My use case for these Dell refurb machines: installing and learning Linux.

Reviewing old deal threads for N100 mini PCs and other online discussions, I often came across warnings about the lack of Linux kernel drivers (example here). My understanding is that installing Linux is less certain / more complicated, and I'd like the smoothest experience possible as I ramp up.

Seems these old Dell machines can install just about any Linux distro thrown at them, so I'd rather use it as a cheap experimental machine and deal with the higher electricity cost. Would welcome your reactions to my use case / concern.

True. CPU bench: i5-8500=9.5k; N100=5.5k but N100 supports new H.266 video compression standard that YT, streamers will be all going 2 so powerful video performance.

If u need expandability, long term Support, go with Dell. I imagine average user would b happier with N100 minipc with its wifi, if aware that if anything goes wrong, it s likely a throw-away.
There is no streamer on earth live streaming any games from either a N series chip or older 8th gen Optiplex lol

Why this guy got 6 thumbs up is funny to say 2x the performance of Intel 8th gen to an n100. 😆

(corrected previous post)
8th gen and 9th gen are essentially the same in fact you would be hard pressed to find much in the 9th gen category in any platform these days because that was basically an 8th gen refresh stop gap until 10th gen came along. When it comes to former business class computers.

H.266 is a new, more efficient video compression codec standard that all websites that provide video streams should go 2. If will be faster 4 them as well as their users, especially if hardware natively supports H.266 like the N100 does.

N100 lacks the high cpu power that gamers will want. However, for those just streaming a video from a H.266 website, it will be a highly cost effective, low power CPU.

9561 is for desktop 8500 (85W). 8500T (still 35W) is lower. Furthermore passmark is multi core, while single core is more important (which n100 meets and n305 beats).
Also I was comparing to 9100 (i3) and not 8500(i5)
