I have never encountered a Gen 1 in the wild, so I have no comparison to the sound of our Gen 2. That being said, considering the praise for the sound quality of both, I was initially disappointed at how little low end the Gen 2 HomePod had. Great clarity and quality, but thin, tinny sound--for the most part. I had purchased a refurb from Apple at the time, after troubleshooting with support they swapped it out on the guess that something was wrong with it. The replacement sounded about the same, maybe ever so slightly better.

After a few weeks of living with it I happened to stumble across the culprit while playing classical: Apple Music ATMOS. I had played an older classical piece that was non-ATMOS, and it had depth and satisfying bass. I then happened to play the Star Wars: A New Hope theme song for my boys, and it sounded awful--weak, thin. Compared the two, saw the older track was not ATMOS. Turned off ATMOS in the Home app settings, and the Star Wars theme sounded great, proper body and depth to the song. Maybe this isn't an issue with stereo pair HomePods, I only have one so I can't test that. I would say it is worth turning off ATMOS in the Home app if you run a single HomePod Gen 2 to see if it makes a difference:

Home app > three-dot circle in the upper right > Home Settings. Under the People section, tap your Apple account name. Under Connected Media, tap Apple Music. Toggle off Dolby ATMOS.

Just bought two of these. Pairing these to an Apple TV unit sounds really nice.

I have one too… I'm just saying you won't find a new gen 1 to buy anywhere.

Also, Verizon has HomePod mini, buy one get one 50% off, so essentially $75 each. Not an all time low, but a good enough deal if you are swapping from Alexa, but don't need the full Homepod in some rooms.

Regarding returns, the product page itself says free returns, no mention of restocking fee. That looks to be just for "wireless devices", and that should mean phones. I think this is considered an accessory.

Now I know these can't compete with say a true $600 + system using recommendations from Reddit, but is there anything in the $350 range that could be better than two of these? Note this is only focusing on sound quality, not other hardware / software benefits.
Just curious but is the idea that you have two homepods on each side of a TV or something vs a surround sound system, soundbard, etc?

I've never had a wireless speaker before. Do you have to buy two / is it useless/gimped to only buy one?

Gen 3 on the way but still love sound quality from my Gen 1's, so I picked up 2x of these. Apple TV definitely being refreshed at a lower price point so wouldn't recommend that sale.

Is it worth it to definitely get 2, or would I be ok with just 1 for now to try it out?

Shoot. There's a certain site offering 10% CB and I totally overlooked it. Not 100% sure if it would have worked but may be worth a try for those of you about to place an order.

What way to people generally use them? Stereo obviously but I see people talking about using 3+…how would you do that? Just for use in multiple rooms/areas? I assume there's no way/appeal to use them as center channels for a LCR setup ?
It's nice for whole house music, and it's nice if you can see your TV from a different room than where your current speakers are located.

No. They can pair with an Apple TV as your two front speakers and you can channel other device audio via ARC/eARC.
So I can hook a TiVo mini to my TV and then the TV to an Apply TV 4K and use ARC/eARC to play the TiVo mini sound though the HomePods via the Apply TV 4K?
