I believe if you don't want AppleCare, you can still buy the device and call Apple and have it removed from your account and get a refund. This has been mentioned on previous posts, but I have no experience with us.

For TMO, you just need to have a debit card on file. You can pay with CC before your auto pay debit is scheduled.

If you go onto the Costco website, there is a opportunity to trade in your device. They will not count the value of your device against the purchase price. They will send you a Costco card.

I wish I could wait until September/October for the new 16, but my 12 mini can't even keep charge for more than three hours - it's time to upgrade.

Don't forget: if you have an Amex platinum card, you DO NOT need Applecare. They will pay for the repair or replacement of your phone up to $800. The condition is that your cell phone wireless bill must be paid by your amex card for at least 1 month. (this sucks cause tmobile removes discounts from your account if you use a credit card - forcing you to use a debit account).
