I would think so. I used a original Ti83 for the longest time. When I went to the university they made us use these for chem I, II, Orgo I, II, Physics I and II. I initially didn't like it because I had grown accustomed to having the flexibility of the Ti83, but then again these will pretty much be allowed into any test. Over the years it has become a good friend, It's pocketable too. Just make sure the kid knows the DRG button will change the type of mathematics it will use and if its not on the right setting it will throw the answer way off in the case that you are doing calculations that use RAD (radians) and you are switching between that and the default DEG (degree).
If they had allowed it in more things I think I would have preferred something like the TI MultiView Scientific series because they have that extra tall screen that allows you to see fractions properly, and you can have some formulas where it lets you plug in the numbers. It still wont fix having to learn how to do these things, but it will expedite doing things when you need to use it.
