To play with the most updated rules, consider the Gathering Storm expansion (the second major one for Civ VI) which should be about $4.60 on sale. It includes all the updates from the Rise & Fall expansion, it's only missing the 8 new civs that were in that expansion.

The other DLC (which include a bunch more civs and world leaders to play as, and some custom game modes and maps) are only worth it if you buy them as part of the Platinum pack (~$11) or the Anthology pack (~$24, which contains everything).

I don't think you are missing much IMHO. Civ 5 was totally awesome and while I realize it has had years of tweaks and bug fixes I just could not get into Civ 6 that much. Even the graphics had a bit of a cartoonish look to them compared to the more regal looking Civ 5.

Which is likely why Civ VI is on sale, trying to get new players (read: addicts) into the game so they'll buy VII.

I haven't played since V, but for $3, why not. Also available on Steam for $2.99 if you don't want to bother with a third-party (though Fanatical is good).

If you're new to Civ, the vanilla experience is perfectly enjoyable. If you're coming from other Civ generations, you'll probably find it lacking

man, this is probably the best description of this.

i feel like people need to "ease into" civ games, starts with something base/simpler, then go for full experience.
