You need to know your dog and understand how these work to make a fair assessment as to whether or not this type of leash is suitable for you. These overgeneralized blanket statements are rather ridiculous. If your dog is generally on the smaller size and obedient with little to no risk of suddenly accelerating away from you, these leashes are really fantastic. Even if not, and you've gotten good at using the locking features and controlling the run out they have their place.

As an anecdote I've run thousands of miles with my dog and can confidently say this was way better in my scenario with my 16lb dog than those waist-worn bungee style leashes and lightyears better than the fixed-length ones.

You can control how fast the cord lets out by partially depressing the button (sort of like a clutch) and lock it any length with a thumb switch. With practice you can get really good at signaling to your dog what you want him/her to do, especially with the clicky haptic feedback of the "clutching" mechanism.

I'd say understand the product and your dog and make the call for yourself.
I would not recommend a cord leash if you have a dog that likes to pull or lunge. I've gotten many rope burns from these cord leashes, so I typically buy the ribbon style.
I really think you need to qualify that. This deal is for an Extra SMALL leash for dogs up to 18 lbs. I use Flexi leashes for my Shih Tzu. I'm happy to report there have been no vicious lunging attacks while walking my Tzu on a Flexi. If you have an 80 lb pit bull, then yeah, an Extra Small Flexi for 18 lb max weight dogs might not be the leash for you!

Good brand. I have 3 dogs. Generally, these use either ribbon (tape) or cord. Ribbon in/out retraction/advance makes noise but housing is smaller. Cord is stronger and retraction does not make as much noise but housing is larger.

Never use a retractable leash! Ask any vet or dog trainer. Google it.

I know all the hardcore people will say these are terrible and don't get them but we love ours. More importantly, our dogs love them. Yes, you have to pay attention and be careful but they are great. Make sure you get one that can set a limited distance. Those are handy in certain situations.

For small dogs these are fantastic. I have two of these leashes that are 20+ years old and still work perfectly. German manufacturing!

Great for beach uses to give my dogs some freedom but still follow the leash rules.

I've used my medium size Flexi daily for over a year without a single issue. My dachshund is a free-range beast and has put this leash through the wringer! He's drug this leash a half mile with me chasing them both without any damage to either, can't say the same for me though.

Never say never. They are wonderful. If you want to lead the dog, you just lock it at 6 feet and it's a normal damn lead.

If my dog wants to swim in a pond, I can let it open while still having an easy way to retrieve the dog if it wants to get crazy and chase a duck.

I can shoot a finger gun at my dog and have it roll over playing dead, so that makes me at least a semi-competent dog trainer, and if you use these properly they are great.

For initial lead training of a bigger dog, a thicker rope is better for the handler, but it doesn't matter with smaller dogs.

Yup agreed. It sounds like such a leash would be a good idea but in practice it's just a risk. And that's before the possibility of the stopping mechanism breaking randomly which basically releases your pup and creates traffic accident risks
I just buy the bigger dog ones and go overkill. The clutching mechanism will never break. Plus my hand fits in the bigger loop better.
