From consumer reports:

If you keep a standalone freezer to stay stocked up between sales or shopping trips, you may be tempted to relegate that large appliance to the garage. It's a common place for freezers, and often it's easier to find space there than in a cramped kitchen. But if you live in a region with significant temperature swings, your garage may not be the best place for your freezer.

Changes in temperature in an unheated garage can be hard on these appliances. "You need to make sure that the unit is not exposed to temperatures above 110° F or below 0° F, because that may damage the freezer," says Larry Ciufo, a CR project leader who tests large appliances.
Wendy Treinen, director of brand and product communications at GE Appliances, agrees. "In hot weather the freezer has to work overtime, and in very cold temperatures, the freezer 'gets confused' and shuts off, failing to keep a freezing temperature because it 'thinks' it is already maintaining a temperature of 0° F," she says.

If your freezer's compressor has to work overtime to maintain its interior temperature when it's very hot in your garage, it costs you more money to run the appliance. If it's too cold and the compressor shuts off, your food could thaw.

I have one in the garage, probably over 10 years already, very reliable. My wife prefers upright freezer over chest because it's easy to access anything without having to dig thru the freezer. Defrosting is a pain without making a mess tho.

I've had 2 of these for 2 years now. I've never had a problem. I got 2 of these instead of 1 larger one as my husband told me to never bring something home I can't move myself (he has a bad back). This can be easily moved on a dolly with a ratchet strap/securing cord by an average female. You can't fit extra large pizza boxes in them- read the dimensions- but we also don't need extra large pizzas.

Extended warranty is HIGHLY recommended! I bought it in 2021 and it kicked the bucket a year later - right after the manufacturer warranty expired. Regular use, not even in the garage. BB wanted $100 just for a technician to come and check it. And the soonest appointment was in like 3 weeks.
Sorry to hear that- I've had mine 2 years no problems, maybe yours unfortunately was made on a Friday afternoon?

3 yr is $50, almost a third of the cost.

paid $230 last november and so far so good. it does build frost on the sides but haven't cleaned it out yet. we keep it in the dining room and it runs quiet and very convenient compared to a chest freezer. many credit cards double 1yr mfg warranty if it breaks after warranty period.

it is not recommended to transport any fridge/freezer sideways due to oil in the compressor. it even says on the box not to tilt it more than certain degrees during transportation. if no other option, keep it upright for couple days before turning on. i have a hitch on the y and transported it upright strapped on a cargo carrier.

I wish I'd spent $50 on warranty. I didn't, so I was out $204 - that's what I paid for the freezer in 2021.

I guess I don't know what they mean by Garage ready. Every normal freezer I've ever had worked in the garage just fine.
If your garage is insulated or you live somewhere that doesn't see temperatures on either extreme, of course this would be the case.

But the average garage in California isn't insulated and can easily see temperatures exceeding 110° in the summer, which will kill a regular fridge or freezer.

It's also important to acknowledge that anecdotes about old units that used R12 (freon) don't apply here.

Freon has a much lower condensing temperature than R134A, which meant that in order to get the same amount of cooling, the compressor would have to run more frequently but didn't have to get as hot.

Sure, they lasted forever and could survive a garage, but that was at the expense of using a lot more power.

This is too small. It'll just be a headache until you get another one.
What a ridiculous thing to say! As if there is only one use case, one family size that might want or need one of these.
