But the current brushless M12, as seen in this deal, had about the same torque as the Skil with a significantly higher speed. And when it comes to compact impact drivers, it's typically the speed of driving in a fastener that matters the most.

Value-wise, the SKIL is $80. If you split the cost of this kit equally 3 ways, each tool averages $78.66. That's a little less than the price of the SKIL. Although realistically, the 3/8" stubby sells for up to $150 on eBay. Selling it and the drill, a person could have a lot less into the impact driver if that's the only tool they were after.
Seems like this is still good value kit regardless of how good SKIL is in comparison.
As shown by the Skil offering, it's pretty easy to make an impact driver with high torque. It is much harder to do so and keep it's speed up. They probably just used a heavier hammer to make it hit harder, but the motor just can't spin the heavy hammer as quickly.
