$170 is 44.5% of this deal…not insignificant

It's a relative thing. If one is thinking that the screen can be better that takes away from the experience. But if one never even had a handheld, the experience is awesome. I'm still in awe at the LCD, so OLED will always be there as something to look forward to and available if I decide I want more. But I'm honestly happy with the LCD and haven't lost that feeling of satisfaction. One of the secrets of staying happy as a SD'er is being happy with less, as constantly desiring more ends following the law of diminishing return as far as our complacency.

Great deal! Affordable and great portable console. Wish soon will see the same price for Rog Ally Z1 Extreme.

I pre-ordered my 512 GB deck and it was about $700 after tax and shipping. This is a great deal. I'm sure the OLED model is better, but it's really the games that make the device fun, not an infinite contrast range. The coolest thing about this is as soon as you log into your Steam account you probably already own a ton of games you can access on day one, so you don't need any additional investments to start having fun. Plus, the OS is great. It's neat to be in a strictly Steam world on a device with all your content there ready to go (except for a lot of multiplayer shooters because of their anti-cheat software that doesn't run on these hybrid systems). I'm considering buying some of these as gifts.

It's not just an LCD vs OLED thing, the LCD is objectively not good -- only covers about 70% of sRGB as you would often find on the screen of a budget laptop, which means that colors are washed out. It is a noticeable difference if you put it next to almost any smart phone, iPad or Macbook (including those use LCD screens).

But I agree it could be a personal thing -- lots of people can't tell that the colors are bad, and they don't mind.
The colors are great on this IPS panel. The OLED gives better contrast and deeper blacks. Nobody uses OLED as a color reference panel. OLED actually oversaturates colors, but they look great. You kind of sound like a vision snob here.

I was going to upgrade an old computer of mine with a $200 graphics card, just so I can play certain 3d heavy/Unreal 4 engine platformers but nothing too resource intensive like Starfield. But with Steam deck going for $300 maybe I should just get one of these instead? How does it run being hooked up to a tv? I figure its just an hdmi.. does it run better docked? no difference?
It's ok. It struggles with higher resolutions. I had asked in another thread about a dock and got a lot of sarcasm around it being obvious. It works but framerate was lower and noticable for me. The lower res screen seems like a good design decision for the hardware.

I've had no problem playing Hogwarts, Titanfall, and even the recent Jedi games (newest one can struggle a bit) but only on the local screen.

Maybe others have had different experiences.

Performance will vary based on the game obviously, but value wise I think this makes sense. "Docking" is simply done with a usb-c to HDMI dongle (make sure it is compatible but most are) or the official dock. Unlike a Nintendo Switch, there is no difference in power while the Steam Deck is docked. However, outputting to a higher resolution display instead of the lower resolution built-in screen will affect overall performance.

I love mine. I've finished as many games in the time I've owned this device as I did in the last 10 years.

Being able to put the device on standby for a week and come back to a game is amazing (I finished RDR2 over the course of five months that way).

The touchpads set this device apart also - playing anno 1404 in bed is such a novelty.

Not a linux user, but if I buy the 64gb one:

1. How would I transfer the SteamOs to a new nvme drive?
2. Does the 64gb built in memory just show as another drive?
I bought a 1tb Sabrent rocket 2230 nvme 4.0 for $100 off Amazon and replaced the internal 64gb one. Took about half an hour to an hour following YouTube vids.

It's not 64gig built in. It's utilizing the nvme slot. The 64gig drive will need to be replaced by a larger SSD.

To transfer the data/os it gets a bit tricky but there are utilities to do it.

What works best is if you reinstall the steam OS from scratch on the new empty SSD using a micro SD card and the utility valve provides.

Definitely a snob. 70% isn't that bad and the color is decent. Real "budget" laptops comes with 45% sRGB and are absolutely horrendous. But imagine thinking you can get a $300 handheld device and complain about the screen being "only" 70% sRGB.

This or an open box Rog Ally from Best Buy?

Is this better or worse than a Z1 (non-extreme) Ally?

those deals at 400 were incredible, but around me it's 500, and that's a far cry from 300 for the budger buyer. now the play is local/ebay markets where you can get the extreme still, for 400-420. You cannot get the deck oled for less than 550 on eBay...and yes that means there is 0 reason to buy there used/opened unless someone did a HD upgrade that you're scared to try, or they paid for the "premium etched screen 1tb edition" and oftentimes people don't figure "upgrades" very heavily in their bid considerations. The upper end of everything takes a beating upon resale.

It can definitely run RDR2, my son played through the entire game recently on it. ProtonDB [protondb.com]is a good place to check for compatibility, issues, and performance.

OLED displays usually suffer from PWM flicker.

As someone who owns both versions, the LCD model can absolutely still be worth it depending on your use case.

If you plan on playing it more around the house and/or near power outlets rather than travelling much, you won't gain much benefit from the extra battery life of the OLED.

I started with the 512gb LCD with the matte screen and then bought an OLED when they became available because I fell victim to the FOMO. Yes the OLED is a better model but not so much so that you need to blow your budget or else you'll regret it.

Setting them next to each other, the colors do pop more on the OLED screen but I've found that once I'm a couple minutes into a game on the LCD, I just get immersed and forget all about it. Tweaking the LCD's colors with an easy to install utility called "VibrantDeck" makes it significantly more competitive.

Honestly the biggest advantage the OLED model has is the higher refresh rate and the ability to set it at more intervals (30, 40, 45) to smooth out the experience with certain games.
If you're hyper sensitive to frame rate issues, that might be the main reason to go for it.

If you're on a budget, you'll be more than happy with the LCD steamdeck. It's a phenomenally versatile device that has allowed me to fit quality game time in my life when I otherwise just would never have the time.

If money isn't a concern, yeah get the OLED and then throw in the largest SSD you can find.
Either way you'll be having a great time.
