Royal Oak has performed better for me than Kingsford.

Never had a problem with it staying lit throughout the cook

The royal oak briquettes I've used in the past have been awful. Don't get hot and often times it does not stay lit.

New to charcoal grilling. Got "briquets" and steak was ruined by strong perfume smell. Any rec on just pure charcoal?
Just to echo the other comment, make sure coals are fully lit before adding food.

Also, if you do want a smokey flavor on your steaks, be very light handed with the wood chunk/chips. One small piece will be plenty for steaks, it doesn't take much. Brisket on the other can take a lot more smoke.

Stop using briquets. Start using lump charcoal. Only start your charcoal with a chimney. Never any lighter fluid.

B&B Competition Oak Charcoal Briquets. No chemical additives or fillers. They burn hot, clean and long. You can find them at your local Ace Hardware. I've heard great things about Jealous Devil Briquets, but I've not used them yet.

Love a charcoal deal and royal oak has never let me down!
Same great for smoking low and slow not winter. I like to use it as cheap fuel after I wrap.

Wait until ALL of the smoke is gone and the briquettes are ashed over. they should be at their hottest at that point. If you used lighter fluid, that should also be completely burned off at that point.

This answer these are considered the 'best' and most consistent of the most accessible charcoals. You can also find them at some Walmarts, Home Depot, Academy, sometimes on sale and clearance. I stocked up recently on 10lb Jealous Devil XL for $2.99 a box - but these are random finds in random stores.

Yep, same here. Found chunks of metal and a fist sized rock in my last bag. Keyword: Last
Yeah I agree with this but their charcoal is money for back end of smoking when food is wrapped or for burgers everyone once in a while.

In for 5. I just don't see how I can go wrong at this price except by not buying enough.

After trying Royal Oak, I only buy Kingsford regardless of the cost of Royal Oak. You get what you pay for.

Just wait till the white smoke is gone. No need to wait till all of them are ashed over.

Get lump instead of briquets. I like the royal oak brand actually or "expert grill" that you can find very cheap at Walmart

Costco has premium Kingsford 36 lbs for about $16 when they go on sale.

Royal Oak here is cheaper but the Kingsford is better. Still a good price.
