By the end of the warranty, and they die, I think I got my money's worth. I will buy whatever refurb that is on sale at that time. I am trying not to overthink this lol. KISS... you know
The dock is why. I think the reason many people find these drives loud is because of how they shake and resonate in many cases. They sound much quieter in a small plastic dock. I speak from experience.
It also depends where the drives are in relation to you and what frequencies you can hear or that particularly annoy you. I wouldn't advise people to overthink it too much. If the price and size works for you, get one. I don't find them any more noisy than some consumer drives.

I would advise people to give it some thought, especially if they're sensitive to noise. Remember, these Ultrastars will continuously "tick" every ~5 seconds, even when idle. Also, most consumer (though not necessarily prosumer) drives do have quieter (and slower) seeks. Put one of these Ultrastars next to the drive from a WD EasyStore/Elements (of similar design) and have them do random seeks and you will notice a substantial difference in how loud they are.
Excellently packed, in a sealed static-free bag, fully enscounced in thick bubble wrap.
This latest one has 1703 days, 3 hours, with 90 start/stops. That equates to about 4y, 9 months of on time. Running it through an extended SMART test via HDSentinel now. I think that takes about 20 hours or so.
I ran out of SATA ports in my computers so I utilized a couple of USB SATA adapters. The first was a VERY old, USB2.0, with options for IDE (!) connections. This adapter only allowed 1gb to be detected, even after converting the disk from MBR to GPT. Did not need the included power adapter as this old as heck adapter had a molex to SATA power adapter.
I had a more modern USB 3.0 adapter in a sled format. I was concerned the power might be an issue as there's no way to fit the power adapter cord in this sled. No problems though. So here it sits while the SMART test is running.
But if you search on here, reddit, and elsewhere on the interwebs, you can find your own proof.

But from what I have read they have great service and stand behind their warranty.

You recommend buying then I gather?
You recommend buying then I gather?
I don't think that's necessary.
I like when people share their personal experiences and don't just do a drive-by "this product sucks" or whatever without offering any corroborating information.
Those people can get lost. No one cares about some internet stranger's 3 word opinion/review.
When someone shares their actual experience with a product, it gives everyone else a preview and maybe someone grabs a piece of that story to help them with a product problem they're having.
Besides, what else are we doing in here if we're not sharing experiences? Just make the site thumbs up/down and call it a day.

Many folks here will test a brand new HDD the same way, which isn't a bad idea.
I'm going to use it to backup media. Extended SMART passed without issue.
