Good deal - Just keep in mind folks whether you buy new or used HDD it is always a good idea to protect your data by having multiple copies. Me being a computer nerd do all 3 of these below, but you should do at least one (preferably 1 local and 1 remote).

Locally you can do disk to disk backup
Locally you can use RAID and multiple drives
Remotely you can sync your data to a cloud provider like MS OneDrive, Amazon AWS, Google Drive, DropBOx, ect....

Considering that HGST came out with it's 12tb drive in 2016 and Western digital came out with it's 14tb drive in 2018 are there any indicators that the WD drive would have slight edge in durability as it may have less hours used and be an iterative improvement over the 2016 release? Although price per TB is more, would the WD 14tb refurbished be worth the premium for anecdotal better reliability?
My thinking about reliability and how long these drives going to last... imho

By the end of the warranty, and they die, I think I got my money's worth. I will buy whatever refurb that is on sale at that time. I am trying not to overthink this lol. KISS... you know Big Grin

I agree with your line of thinking but those drives are so close together that I'm not sure it would be worth much of a premium. If it was a substantially newer model (like the HC550), I'd be more inclined to spend the extra.

The dock is why. I think the reason many people find these drives loud is because of how they shake and resonate in many cases. They sound much quieter in a small plastic dock. I speak from experience.
Also, not all cases are created equally. Some have noise isolation for the drives like rubber grommets and/or sound isolation on the inside of the case. If you mount an enterprise drive to a metal chassis with no case or drive isolation..... it'll resonate pretty loudly on seeks.

It also depends where the drives are in relation to you and what frequencies you can hear or that particularly annoy you. I wouldn't advise people to overthink it too much. If the price and size works for you, get one. I don't find them any more noisy than some consumer drives.

That is true. For a while, I had a Seagate Exos in an ancient case with no vibration dampeners and it sounded like a machine gun. You could hear it in the next room, through the wall. In a more modern case, with vibration dampening, it's still audible and annoying but not nearly as bad. In a USB dock, the drive is pretty quiet.

I would advise people to give it some thought, especially if they're sensitive to noise. Remember, these Ultrastars will continuously "tick" every ~5 seconds, even when idle. Also, most consumer (though not necessarily prosumer) drives do have quieter (and slower) seeks. Put one of these Ultrastars next to the drive from a WD EasyStore/Elements (of similar design) and have them do random seeks and you will notice a substantial difference in how loud they are.

Yes simply based on hours I would assume so.

I just received my second 12TB HDD. The first I purchased some months ago when it was $80. This one had more hours logged than my first, which was more of an exception.

Excellently packed, in a sealed static-free bag, fully enscounced in thick bubble wrap.

This latest one has 1703 days, 3 hours, with 90 start/stops. That equates to about 4y, 9 months of on time. Running it through an extended SMART test via HDSentinel now. I think that takes about 20 hours or so.

I ran out of SATA ports in my computers so I utilized a couple of USB SATA adapters. The first was a VERY old, USB2.0, with options for IDE (!) connections. This adapter only allowed 1gb to be detected, even after converting the disk from MBR to GPT. Did not need the included power adapter as this old as heck adapter had a molex to SATA power adapter.

I had a more modern USB 3.0 adapter in a sled format. I was concerned the power might be an issue as there's no way to fit the power adapter cord in this sled. No problems though. So here it sits while the SMART test is running.

Has anyone dealt with this reseller before? They provide another 5Y warranty and just wondering how hard it is to work with them to honor it? I have not purchased a Used drive before.

Goharddrive and serverpartdeals are THE refurb resellers around these parts. Buy with confidence. Both have excellent customer service and will honor their warranties.
But if you search on here, reddit, and elsewhere on the interwebs, you can find your own proof.

Are you asking if they will be around in the next 5 year? Who knows lol

But from what I have read they have great service and stand behind their warranty.

"Cool story bro"
I don't think that's necessary.

I like when people share their personal experiences and don't just do a drive-by "this product sucks" or whatever without offering any corroborating information.
Those people can get lost. No one cares about some internet stranger's 3 word opinion/review.
When someone shares their actual experience with a product, it gives everyone else a preview and maybe someone grabs a piece of that story to help them with a product problem they're having.

Besides, what else are we doing in here if we're not sharing experiences? Just make the site thumbs up/down and call it a day.

I don't understand how any reviews say 'looks new' considering all drives should look new after blowing the dust off them. Otherwise, the 'born on' date gives them away.

Yes, it's a good buy as long as folks are aware of their limitations and plan on testing them. The same commentary show up everytime these refurbs pop up on eBay or Newegg from the two main suppliers.

Many folks here will test a brand new HDD the same way, which isn't a bad idea.

I'm going to use it to backup media. Extended SMART passed without issue.

Anyone ever used one of these for a NVR? Wondering how it would perform since it would be running 24-7

I went with a Sabrent USB 3 enclosure, which was previously on sale for $20 and smooth sailing. The drive fit easily, it started right up, Disk Management did a simple GUID volume, and it reads and writes quickly and quietly and checked out as healthy in Western Digital Dashboard. It will be a backup for a backup and spend a lot of time unplugged in the box. (I didn't tape the pins or update the enclosure firmware. It took 5 minutes. YMMV I may buy another 12 TB when ebay has a $10 coupon.) Happy camper. :-)
