No need to sand smooth....that myth has been debunked, and it's actually takes longer to create a pan that acts non stick as some roughness actually helps.

This thing is huge and very heavy, not to be taken lightly! I have one and while its not my Grandpa's favorite cast iron skillet, it cooks well and is large enough to prepare for all my family at once.

heavy enough to break a glass top stove even, so def be extra careful when setting it down on such a stove. I hear its good with induction cookers, can any one confirm?

If you take one of these to the bottom for about 10 minutes on a drill, then hit it with some lighter sandpaper, you can turn any Lodge into a smooth as butter griswold cast iron pan.

Total project takes about 20 mins. You just have to re-season it, but that's why it's good to do with a new pan "before" seasoning the first time.

Works like a charm!

I use cast iron on my induction all the time... But because of this one's size, don't know how it would do because my induction 'burners' aren't as big as this thing. I imagine it would still heat up the pan really well, but edges might be less hot.

Tge cooking surface is 12 inches. Your largest burner is probably an ounce that size

15" is pretty big, I have a 12" that I love but it's big and very heavy and it's super heavy when I have grease in it. I do love how it fry up my chicken and fish.

Disagree--smoothing a Lodge makes a HUGE difference. It's quality cast iron, but that "seasoning" they use from the factory is awful.

100% agree that taking it off and re-seasoning is the way to go. Yes, it's work, but worth it.

(And I'd recommend a flap disk and an angle grinder - makes quick work of it).

I have one of these pans. Yes, they are pretty heavy. But the cooking results are great. Yes, it's a little rough, but with all the years of cooking, it's as non-stick as the best non-stick pan you can buy. Just don't use those chain mail cleaners. Lodge actually sells plastic scrapers which work great if you do need to clean something off the surface.

Totally agree -- 15" is HUGE (and would make for a VERY heavy cast iron pan).

Most useful (for me) is the 10-11" size--not too heavy, and big enough for most jobs (and fits nicely on a standard stove).

If you were camping, and needed a single big pan for the fire...maybe a 15" makes sense...but for daily use, this would unlikely get used very much.

I suspect that's why these are Amazon used - thinking people have bought these, got them and returned them because they were too big, and Amazon is now reselling them.

Might look cool hanging from a ceiling rack though...

"Texas Cowboy Breakfast," courtesy of my grandfather -

Fry entire pack of bacon in giant skillet
Remove bacon, leave all the grease
Scramble one dozen eggs in same giant skillet

Proceed to roll doggies up the panhandle..
