People in inner cities consider it unsafe to maintain an open window the size of an air conditioner. The AC can be pushed in or out and there is a large opening into the home.
These units only need the window open less and you could and should run screws through ther window so it can not be forced open more.

Yes I could but I wanted to try a portable. This will be used in a 2nd story bedroom in addition to central air to get the temp colder in that room.

What about the u-shape ones? There opening is smaller than a portable unit, and their cost is less or on par with portable, plus they inherently don't have the negative pressure issue that single hose portables do.

I'm my case, HOA rules forbid window units.

If you set an alert they cycle sometimes. Not nearly as cheap but I think but usually towards the end of the season when they want to offload inventory. If I recall last year around August the 14k btu Toshiba dual hose inverter refurb was going for $350 or so.

I have this (or one that looks just like it). I've had it for over 5 years and it's worked perfectly every time. The only problem is that it can be a little noisy. But it does the job.

If you want easier returns, Amazon has it at the same price. Note the eBay one above nor this one isn't the inverter model, but it is dual hose and has heat too.
