It was my understanding that GDI engines don't really benefit as much from detergent gasoline since the fuel doesn't flow over the valves like it would with port or throttle body injection.
Edit: Other than keeping the injectors clean, which can be accomplished with the occasional DIY fuel treatment.
Two fuels going into two separate banks....one engine controller. The two fuels could easily have slightly different energy densities and other properties...the engine controller would be adjusting injector to pulse width and ignition timing for the engine as a whole, so one side could be running lean, while the other rich. How did you manage and maintain fuel pressure? Usually that's done with a vacuum modulated FPR for the injectors as a whole...so you decoupled them...are you certain the pressure was identical? Even slightly more pressure on one side will mean more volume of fuel getting injected.
This in turn could result in uneven cylinder and combustion temperatures, which can lead to more or less deposits forming.
The major flaw (absent more information) is it seems to me the experiment didn't properly control for all of the variables. You cannot reach a sound conclusion in this setup. The fact that you ran two fuels in parallel could be the very reason one of them formed deposits.

Possibly but it was run by a team of PhDs and engineers and I'd like to think they had some clue as to what they were doing. I didn't run it so I can't give you the details but they just showed us the results internally. Don't recall if they ever publicized it but I thought it was cool and always wish they could have done the same for engine oil but unfortunately splitting that system is even more difficult than splitting the fuel.
