You are talking about new card bonus vs existing card offer on Amex. That's a huge difference. You don't need to apply for a new card and get a credit pull to get the Amex offer.

You don't have to spend all $1k in one shot. It can be multiple purchases totaling $1k. I wish I had seen it before the OP posted and before I went on a spending binge.
