same price at Micro center if one near you. i bought same config with 512 GB 2 days ago for $629+tax. its certified refurbished, so it came with full 1 year warranty etc...

I don't think it works exactly like that. Like you won't receive the latest operating system and then apps for that out of date os, whether it be a OSX or iOS, will no longer have support for it. There's no activation locks via their servers and there's sometimes workarounds like using an older version of an app, but that usually doesn't last very long as the vendor of those apps will cut support eventually as well. The m1 is expected to receive updates until late 2020s so I don't see it as a horrible investment of $600 if someone is interested in trying Apple's silicone. Just so you know, there's MacBook pros from 2015 (Intel 5th Gen) that are running OSX 12 Monterey which is still supported until August of this year, meaning they're not end of life yet, so end of life for the M1 is really anyone's guess but it's safe to expect a few more years.

Is there any documented cases of this actually happening? This sounds like FUD. I'm still using a MacBook Air from 2014 as my daily garage computer for as a video and PDF viewer with zero issues.

Go look. Google it. New, old stock iPhones and iPads have already been bricked by this activation process because they use older TLS certificate standards in their older iOS versions. Apple has quietly dropped these older TLS standards in the activation process. There's no workflow to upgrade them because they're effectively bricks if they've never been activated.

Apple is not the only company doing stuff like this, but they sure are a market leader.

Enjoy the devices while you can. They're well thought out, and the user experience is good. There are reasons why people are "buying" these things. Just know you don't actually own it. And it's very likely to be bricked at some arbitrary end of life by Apple.

-Source: I've seen old stock iPhone 6 through 8 bricked by this and some fairly recent iPads. Angry corporate customers that left their Apple products in the box too long. There are other documented cases on YouTube and independent forums, but they are routinely deleted from Reddit and Apple's forums.

Apple doesn't just brick devices when they're considered obsolete. There's timelines you can lookup for what OS is supported and when that OS is going to no longer receive support. So yes, they DO eventually become obsolete but it's usually a pretty reasonable timeline upwards of 10 years and they do not just "brick" the device at EOL. It will still work fine but will have some nuances to navigate.

It would have been a great price 3 months ago. IMO, one would be better off spending $60 more and get a brand new M1 MBA at Walmart for $649.

bought one from microcenter 512 GB version for $620+tax.

if one near, please check "certifified refurb" -. we get Apple Box with brand new casing, new battery and 1 year warranty.

i think the 1 year warranty might be from microcenter, but if Apple warranty still there on that serial#, we can use it on the top of it.

only concern i have is this M1 is 4 years old, not sure how many more years Apple provides updates with new MacOS moving forward.
