From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

I threw in a 16GB 2666 crucial stick I had laying around and it worked fine. Probably overkill but hasn't had an issue in 4+ months of use.
Cool.

Looking at picking these drives [amazon.com] with 2-bay Synology. Any concern ??

For the 1520+ with inbuilt GPU, is that different than the DS1522+? Does DS1522+ have the GPU for 4k transcoding? https://www.synology.com/en-us/pr.../DS1522%2B

I am waiting for Prime deal
I cannot imagine the deal will be any better on Prime Day. The manufacturers now set the sale pricing that their authorized dealers must follow, which is actually technically illegal and called price fixing. It will more than likely be the same price as at B&H.

One novice question. Does 224+ offers two back up or whatever we call this?

I have 224+, you can do raid 1, the 2nd bay is a mirror of the first. Then you can plug in another HDD in the USB and run a Hyper Backup or USB Copy.

Generally if you think you need more storage space in the future. So instead of buying another 2 bay unit to expand your storage, you invest on the 4 bay now so you dont have to buy a separate unit.

How long is the hardware supported with updates? I don't want to buy it and it goes EOL in a couple years.

The Synology RT2600AC looks like a nice router, but it only supports the ac spec which is now a bit dated. I'd suggest at least an ax router if you're in the market.

More storage. Personally holding out for the 12 bay Jonsbro N5 diy build. Getting into 4k uhd rips in a mid life crisis requires a lot of terabytes Smilie

Can any of these models, including the TS-464, support simultaneous playback of three to five 4K videos?
Additionally, how smooth is the process of dragging the video slider to search for timestamps?
Does it perform similarly to a local hard drive?
What are you guys broadcasting/watching that needs this kind of processing power?

Wonder if Amazon going to price match
Amazon hasn't had these in stock for a while, I have been eying the DS923+ for a while because this one has 4GB RAM and can do Object Detection in photos on top of face detection. However I wanted to save money and get 2 x DS224+, leave one at home, one at work this way I have 2 copies of everything in 2 different sites.
Does anyone know if I can get 1 DS923+ now, and start backing up my stuff, and then assign DS224+ in another location to sync only certain folder to keep a mirror but still use my 923+ as my primary remote access?

But downside of that is you are putting all your eggs in one basket, say surge/fire/water damage, and all 4 drives are gone. Depending on what you need them for, in my case I want to get rid my photo storage accounts and stop paying $120/year and move my photos to my NAS and access remotely, so I would also need to keep Object detection, so I need to go with 923+ unless I buy 224+ and upgrade ram. My plan was to get 2 x 224+'s.

If you don't need to migrate some data from service like "photo station" - just mark disks with numbers and insert it into new box. in the same order
I'm in the same situation. I have a 2 bay. Would I be able to move to 4 bay, but then add only a 3rd drive. How does it work if my set up is the 2nd drive is just a dupe of drive 1
