From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

For the 1520+ with inbuilt GPU, is that different than the DS1522+? Does DS1522+ have the GPU for 4k transcoding? https://www.synology.com/en-us/pr.../DS1522%2B
No. 1522+ does not have.

Use below link to check which NAS supports hardware transcoding and which does not.

Remember if your purpose is to use it for Plex then you need plex pass to take advantage of hardware transcoding.

Anyone have experience in using the 923+ for virtual machines, if memory is increased?

Not on these consumer models, only the higher end like DS1823xs+ or DS2422+. There is a script on Reddit to get rid of warnings for those.
i ended up making my own NAS. it took me a while to wrap my mind around it but at the end it was very rewarding. I used unraid and pc case with 12 bays

does synology still mark the drives as yellow or give you a warning for using your own hard drives and not synology branded ones?
They don't require synology branded ones. But if you use WD and have the WD diagnostics enabled you'll get a warning after a certain number of hours- I think something like 3 years.

Don't use WD or their diagnostics and you'll be fine. They support Seagate and Toshiba (Toshiba makes Synology branded drives).

It's $30 less at Ebay, ships from NewEgg. Ordered mine this morning and it shipped this afternoon.

I wanted to wait for the 1522, but at this price, I can live with this.

The newest OS supports models released as early as 2013.

No bueno if you have some tech skills and wanna DIY, the hp microserver gen 10 plus goes on ebay routinely for 300 400$ range or 550 perhaps much better ans stronger with ecc and can run Xpenology think synology BYOD.

Best fo both worlds but there is a learning curve. Best investment I did.

Amazon hasn't had these in stock for a while, I have been eying the DS923+ for a while because this one has 4GB RAM and can do Object Detection in photos on top of face detection. However I wanted to save money and get 2 x DS224+, leave one at home, one at work this way I have 2 copies of everything in 2 different sites.
Does anyone know if I can get 1 DS923+ now, and start backing up my stuff, and then assign DS224+ in another location to sync only certain folder to keep a mirror but still use my 923+ as my primary remote access?
You can use hyper backup to backup whatever folders you want to the remote. They don't have to be identical. You can use a one bay as your remote.

What's a good hard drive to use with these?

I understood most of what you said, but i'd be surprised if 90% of the people in this thread understood it.

You buy synology because of simplicity and reliability, not because you're a l33t haxor NAS expert.
