From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.
The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.
Damn… that's I posted long long back. Glad to know that it's still helping people.
Thanks for sharing & acknowledgement

I wouldn't make a nas decision based on Plex. The $180 nvidia shield can be the server, just point the shield at the nas. People getting not getting the nas they want is similar to buying a much inferior house because it had a jet shower. U do know you could have bought the better house and added a jet shower, right? Anyways it's better to keep them separate. The device storing irreplaceable data I'd want the least that can go wrong

I'm a photographer and use my 4-bay Synology to store my photo library. It delivers very high reliability: I have a USB drive attached, and it backs up to that drive. So the four drives are already redundant in case one fails, and the entire system is backed up on top of that. Eventually, I'll buy another Synology and install it remotely, to protect against theft and fire.

I have the Synology and my home router on a UPS. If we briefly lose power, the Synology keeps running, and if the outage lasts more than 15 minutes, the Synology gracefully shuts down and the UPS powers the router for another few hours.

The 923+ Synology has a feature called immutable snapshots. This hardware locks all of the internal snapshot backups so that they cannot be deleted or modified for 30 or 90 days. This protects you against ransomeware attacks.

Overall, Synology is the best there is for small and midsize business data storage and protection, especially if you don't want to store your data on the cloud. Just remember that if a thief breaks in, they'll steal everything, so you must have offsite data backup.

As a user, I love the Synology except that 1 Gb/s is very slow. The 923+ can support 10 Gb/s, which is very fast but also very expensive. For that kind of speed, locally attached storage is way better. What you can do instead is use 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet, which is very affordable.

Yes, have you seen the form factor of Hp Gen10plus it can fit 4x 3.5H and 2 more or 1 more ssd I believe..agreed if you have no tech skills or don't have time. Go for synology boxes, but they are severely gimped unless you Shell $$$$ for the higher priced ones. I have 1 DS1813, 2x HP n54l and 1x gen10 plus. The idea is not to build a big ass 10 bay Fractal Design XL ..I mean you can also DIY a good cheap NaS using Synology OS and have a much better plex experience and overall better specs vs synology cheap cpu ram models. You get good models with Synology too at the $$$$$ levels.
I have a bare bones Synology 2 drive (218+?, don't care to go read it) and it works perfectly fine as a network storage drive, photo station, docker container running pihole + home assistant and whatever else I want to throw at it. I don't do plex or transcoding or anything like that.

I think I paid $229 for it and $80 per drive almost 6 years ago.

I bought a 923+ when it was on sale a couple times ago. I've since set it up with 12x14x14 in SHR, and will be upgrading to 4x14tb SHR soon. I wish I had 5 bays - otherwise, it has been performing perfectly for me.

I have a Zidoo media player that accesses the files directly, so the lack of transcoding does not matter to me.

I have 224+, you can do raid 1, the 2nd bay is a mirror of the first. Then you can plug in another HDD in the USB and run a Hyper Backup or USB Copy.
Can you have two SSDs for raid1 config for fast data access and back the data up to the USB copy to a big HDD drive?

Over the past 10 years the prices of NAS enclosures seem like they've not really fluctuated. Why are they so expensive? Is there a software interface to make it easy to consume media stored (or do you have to also get Plex)? How do you justify the prices of these devices plus the cost of drives, and at what point does it make sense to use this vs converting an old desktop PC to something functionally similar?

Any reason in particular to purchase from Newegg (or any of the other options)?

Easy mnemonic rule - for transcoding need NAS with Intel processor

No, just personal preference for me. I've had good luck with Newegg in the past and had a not so good experience with B&H but tbf that was many, many years ago.

Obviously Synology is established and trusted. But dang I've been disappointed in the way security and access are set up. For example, in wanting say DAV access to be restricted to certain folders, that isn't possible. Instead, you have to restrict account access to certain folders. Then use those accounts to log in to DAV. That's backwards. The problem is, with admin and other accounts having DAV access, entire volumes are exposed. So you end up denying DAV access to all accounts but one. It's difficult to do this and counterintuitive and frustrating. Very disappointed in the security model DSM uses.

I use wireguard to vpn in and use smb. But for offering access to others to specific folders, there problems like this arise.
