The appeal of this drive isn't Gen 3 which in everyday use on a laptop isn't a noticable difference. The appeal of this drive is it's low power consumption for good Gen 3 speeds. This is a good drive for portable devices that rely on battery power.

For the majority of use cases, there is no difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4. Marketing got you. Also, is there a better available deal currently for a similar performance?

I bought a 2TB 980 Evo Pro at a better price a year ago. Now, every item shows a discount based on an overpriced tag—so greedy

Well depending on what you're using it for. I come from the standpoint of an OS drive. There is a big difference for OS drives from gen 3 to 4. Maybe for storage drive and other less taxing use cases, sure I would agree.

Many of the deals on Amazon prime day this year is "fake deals" and cause of inflation. If you want a good slick deal on a OS level drive then go with the higher end sky Hynix p41 2TB

Sorry, but there is no difference in OS loading in between gen 3 and gen 4. You can hardly find a difference even with SATA SSD which is much slower. But that speed is only for sequential write and read. Only huge file transfers can potentially benefit from gen 4 (like specific server tasks). Just check some real application tests, not synthetic ones.

Hello, I am not referencing to simple boot times for an OS drive. As I do agree with you on boot times and simple everyday use.

Speed improvements of Gen 4 SSDs can reduce the time taken for the OS to handle multiple background processes, leading to a more responsive system. Gen 4 SSDs have higher input/output operations per second (IOPS), which enhances their ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. This is useful for users who run several applications at once or use virtual machines like myself.

Those who use heavy-duty applications or video editing or 3D modeling, the speed improvements of a Gen 4 SSD can lead to significant productivity gains. OS drive doesn't simply mean OS loading.

I would say spend the 20 bucks more for the sky hynix p41 instead of this gen 3 version if you absolutely need one.

There is no performance improvement for Gen4 for VMs, multiple apps, heavy duty apps, productivity apps, games, 3D modeling, etc. Just read how OS works (hint: not sequential but random reads/writes). Check non sequential read/write tests (there is a nice article on Techspot).

Hello thanks for the direction, just checked. Out and article.

I'm mentioning heavy workloads, creative work. The difference is here at this level of use case

I'd recommend checking out tech notice on YouTube, he does stuff specifically for creators and their special needs

Sure, there are some specific special needs where Gen 4 can be handy and show the advantage of technology. Like very large file transfers. Maybe professional video editing...

But, back to your initial point: that's not OS related. That's more for storage. Using this as an OS drive wouldn't affect those use cases since those files would typically be on a storage drive instead, but even if they weren't, it is still not correct to label that as OS performance.
