I purchased this unit and had to return it because of how flimsy the metal rods were. I wouldn't buy this unless your stacking boxes are other flat items. Anything heavy will deflect the shelves.

I've bought 4 of these in prior years, all for ~$50@.
Hold a fair amount of stuff. Not as good as the full blown restaurant style wire shelves but then try and find anything else for $50.

Can the vertical supports be taken apart to make shorter shelves on this one?

IIRC the vertical supports were two piece, that screw together piece.
