It's heavy and it'll leave you reallly sore, but its much better than hand sanding or even using a palm sander. I used this for a large attic room with vaulted ceilings and it made things go much quicker.

You'll want to hook this up to a shop vac with a hepa filter and a bag (with no bag, the filter will clog up in half a second and the whole rig stops working almost immediately). It won't just be a little dusty without the vac you won't even be able to see.

Just return the new one in it's place? It's the same item.

No, this is for sanding drywall. If you're sanding a deck, you should probably rent one of those large belt sanders from Home Depot.

A bag around the filter? I'm getting a shopvac delivered this week and I have a 2 1/2 car garage ceiling that I need to sand.
Usually shop vacs will make available bags that fit inside the vac, yea sort of around the filter. All the ridgid/dewalt/vacmaster vacs have model specific bags available for them.

HEPA filter is less commonly available. Ridgid does have one available for their vacs, not sure about the others.

Does this work for sanding the deck?
It could maybe be used for interior floors but unlikely will work well on a deck since decks are not perfectly flat. You can't really sand a deck more than 1 board at a time due to the variation in height and the disc on this is larger than a single board.

Really.. I just bought this two days ago. Gets delivered today. If I reorder and return then I'll have to wait till Sunday to receive it.
If it's the same model, use the one that shows up and return the one that shows up Sunday…

I have tried that, though not using this specific model. It did not work well for me because minor imperfections with my deck (splinters, protruding nails, slightly bowed boards, slightly misaligned boards, etc.) repeatedly snagged the sandpaper. However, I can imagine that it might work on a deck in better condition than mine.

Bear in mind that the machine is designed to work on a very flat surface, and the only resistance it is expecting is from drywall mud.

Go to the comments on Amazon for this specific machine and search for "deck" for more feedback. Others have tried your idea, and while the feedback is mixed, it is mostly positive.

it not aggressive enough for decks or floors. you only need a very light touch for drywall. I have a hard time not taking off too much mud.

Would this work on ceilings after scraping popcorn? Would have been nice if so and not the manual long poles that were back breaking

Did you try sweeping your floor with a toothbrush? We won't know if it's better until you try.

I have this not on a pole and it's fantastic for those of us who aren't as good mudding a professional. Just leave it a bit proud and this will sand it flat in no time.

Use a hepa filter on a shop vac and a long to put the exhaust out a window and it can be pretty low dust

Didn't do it .. just don't. Rent or look for a hardwood refinishing guy. In my area they mostly Brazilian guys or Chinese guys, literally found mine in churrascarias.

Have them sand, you do the rest of the work.
If you rent machine, you will have to learn how to not end up with low and high spots on the deck.
Nothing else will be as cost effective as floor sander. Plus you can blow the deck off, unlike indoors.

Just replace your pressure treated wood deckboards with composite. They are not that expensive. Sander rental + stain every few years will cost you more in the long run.
And get the added benefits of not being able to use your deck in the summer since it'll be 145* in the sun!

Sure. This is basically a circular sander on a stick. Many different grits are available. Nothing will stop working.
Keep in mind it's not random orbit, so you need to keep it moving. And it's relatively light weight. OK for light sanding, but if your deck is really gone, you may want a heavier drum sander to save time.

I had this and though it was difficult sometimes to control the dust even with a shop vac attached, I would not do a ceiling without it, you will save a lot of time from just not having to move the ladder or work platform.
