Price is good but that might be because of boilergate issue with the boiler coating flaking off. https://coffeeblog.co.uk/boilerga...-problems/

I confirmed today, Friday, July 19, 2024 via Whole Latte Love chat that this specific Gold Gaggia does in fact have the coating that is part of #boilergate.

What how do you know if yours has the boiler gate issue? I'm hearing about this now.
Blast your steam wand into an empty cup and look for black flakes

No, they have not. They "fix" it by sending an un-coated aluminum boiler which will suffer from galvanic corrosion because of the upgraded brass grouphead.
According to a poster, the colored versions come with a uncoated boiler but won't that still cause corrosion if they use the same brass grouphead?

Nice link, thanks for posting it. I found this comment on the article saying colored models should include the unlined boiler.

Comment from article:
FYI, I contacted Gaggia North America about how one might buy a machine without the coating, either old stock 2019 model or new stock Evo model made after the coating had been (so I hear) abandoned. (nothing to do with flakes, I just don't use food products with fluoropolymer coatings). I thought others might find their reply useful, from June 27 2024:

"Any of the color versions of the EVO purchased through either Gaggia North America or Whole Latte Love (and Whole Latte Love Canada) will have an unlined boiler. The Stainless Steel version will likely still have the coated boiler. "
Will this unlined boiler on the color versions end up with corrosion on the brass group heads?

Great deal if it weren't for the defective boilers.

what do you mean by corrosion on the brass group heads? Do you mean boiler corrosion?

I have a Gaggia Classic (unlined) from 2015 and the there are pits/corrosion in the aluminum boiler caused by the chemical reaction between aluminum/brass (as far as I understand).

It's not terrible. Keep in mind, these machines are easy to maintain if you have a some DIY knowledge. Lots of Youtube videos detailing the entire process of taking the machine apart completely and putting it back together.

These machines can last a literal lifetime with the proper maintenance.

This is a good price!

I have a Gaggia Classic from 2015 that I bought from Craigslist in 2019 for about $150

It's gone through multiple rounds of maintenance/upgrade. These machines are a beast with so many upgrade paths and will last you a literal lifetime!

Keep in mind that espresso machines require regular maintenance. If you don't backflush, descale, take the machine apart for cleaning once every year or two, then it won't last in the long run.

Espresso as a hobby takes a time investment.

If you get this machine, it's even more important to get a GOOD grinder to get the most out of the machine.

Eventually, if you love your espresso, you''ll want to get a PID, or even better, install Gaggiuino in it. Gaggiuino takes this machine to a whole entire new level of awesome. It'll make espresso that compares to machines costing 5 or 10 times more (Decent for example)

I just installed Gaggiuino last month - it took a while, and I learned a lot about crimping wires, etc, but I also had a lot of help from a group of enthusiasts in the Discord group who are happy to volunteer and lend some knowledge!

If you like tinkering and little projects, this machine will keep you entertained for many many years, and will last you a lifetime.

I have a pre - Pro/Evo/Whatever Model.

Mine was probably from the mid 20-teens when it was just "gaggia classic" I saved up and bought one alongside a rancilio rocky when I was in college.

No issues like this ever reported and its a good machine. Just needs a really high quality grinder (My Rancilio Rocky aint cutting it tbh) and fresh beans and you'll pull great shots. It is a shame to hear about the issues with the newer ones.

I think a Rancillo (dont recall the model name) but it's closer to $800 I think. There's a company called Turin that sells some Espresso machines but I think they use a thermoblock and not a boiler. I've been curious about the Turin Sonata or the Legato but Im not sure if those are preferable over this, just that the Sonata uses a thermoblock which IIRC is similar to whats in my Breville Barista Pro (or in the bambino)

If anyone can clarify these things please do so.

What about the galvanic corrosion issue with bare brass and aluminum?

Newbie here; i know this gaggia and the bambino are considered the best for entry/mid-level machines, but whats the best entry/mid-level grinder to go with them?

I have a Sette 270 (for $270 back then). Very happy with it, though loud. You'd have to pay a lot more for a quality grinder that's also quiet. If you have the budget, I've heard great things about the Niche Zero
