Comment from article:
FYI, I contacted Gaggia North America about how one might buy a machine without the coating, either old stock 2019 model or new stock Evo model made after the coating had been (so I hear) abandoned. (nothing to do with flakes, I just don't use food products with fluoropolymer coatings). I thought others might find their reply useful, from June 27 2024:
"Any of the color versions of the EVO purchased through either Gaggia North America or Whole Latte Love (and Whole Latte Love Canada) will have an unlined boiler. The Stainless Steel version will likely still have the coated boiler. "
I have a Gaggia Classic (unlined) from 2015 and the there are pits/corrosion in the aluminum boiler caused by the chemical reaction between aluminum/brass (as far as I understand).
It's not terrible. Keep in mind, these machines are easy to maintain if you have a some DIY knowledge. Lots of Youtube videos detailing the entire process of taking the machine apart completely and putting it back together.
These machines can last a literal lifetime with the proper maintenance.
I have a Gaggia Classic from 2015 that I bought from Craigslist in 2019 for about $150
It's gone through multiple rounds of maintenance/upgrade. These machines are a beast with so many upgrade paths and will last you a literal lifetime!
Keep in mind that espresso machines require regular maintenance. If you don't backflush, descale, take the machine apart for cleaning once every year or two, then it won't last in the long run.
Espresso as a hobby takes a time investment.
If you get this machine, it's even more important to get a GOOD grinder to get the most out of the machine.
Eventually, if you love your espresso, you''ll want to get a PID, or even better, install Gaggiuino in it. Gaggiuino takes this machine to a whole entire new level of awesome. It'll make espresso that compares to machines costing 5 or 10 times more (Decent for example)
I just installed Gaggiuino last month - it took a while, and I learned a lot about crimping wires, etc, but I also had a lot of help from a group of enthusiasts in the Discord group who are happy to volunteer and lend some knowledge!
If you like tinkering and little projects, this machine will keep you entertained for many many years, and will last you a lifetime.

Mine was probably from the mid 20-teens when it was just "gaggia classic" I saved up and bought one alongside a rancilio rocky when I was in college.
No issues like this ever reported and its a good machine. Just needs a really high quality grinder (My Rancilio Rocky aint cutting it tbh) and fresh beans and you'll pull great shots. It is a shame to hear about the issues with the newer ones.
