What should I know before making a switch from a major carrier to a smaller one? I currently use Tmobile. What differences would I need to be aware of in terms of quality and user experience?

You are not priority traffic. I remember having data slow down 5 years ago during rush hour at a very busy part of town. Maybe not as prominent now as they been building more infrastructure since.

You have to be willing to do customer service via email or chat only.

Tello is kinda nice as you can change your data amount and minutes each month.

They use real Americans for CS, proves it's not all bottom of the barrel even though it's one of the cheaper ones I've used. Love the service.

They also have a number you can call but preferred method is email.

Love Tello, been with them since 2018. I miss the deals they had on Stacksocial too!

Note Tello plans are not tax inclusive. Saving $4 for first month does not make any sense. Better go with US mobile pooled plan. You can get 5GB pooled plan for $16 with priority data (tax included) which is roughly same Tello (14+taxes)
I was on Tello for really long and have moved to US Mobile. No regrets so far

After with US Mobile for 2 years, I moved from US mobile to Tello because US Mobile voice calls connection are extremely bad as people are hearing part of my words during the conservation. This is extremely frustrated and numerous calls to CS resulting in no help.
Tello has been much much better for Voice/text and Data (180MB-200MB Download speed) in the San Francisco Bay Area with my S22 Ultra. Tello has real-live CS to answer my question before and after I became a Tello customer. Porting-in was quick and simple. Awesome customer service from Tello.

Not a Happy Customer with US Mobile.

I'm also a very happy Tello customer with 3 lines at $5/month each, for 5+ years now. Tello is on the T-mobile network with no roaming, and lower priority, but this hasn't been an issue at all for me. Support is great, and they don't nickel and dime you. Had to get a replacement SIM card recently, and it only cost $2 shipped.

There's no tax if the plan doesn't include voice, so I pay exactly $5/month for 1GB data and unlimited texts. If you are not a heavy voice user, just get a data/texts plan, and use the "Pay As You Go" for minutes (at $.01/minute). One $10 reload lasts for years for me since I use Google Voice (and have Obihai at home). Not sure if WiFi calling uses minutes either. Also note that you can roll data and minutes to the next month if you manually renew before the plan automatically renews.

US mobile is also engaging in mass censorship on their subreddit.

What is the difference between manual vs automatic renew, are they all done in the app, and handle on the monthly basis?

Automatic renewal resets the data/minutes for the next month to the plan limit e.g.if you have a data plan of 1GB, your available data will be reset to 1GB after the auto renewal. The exact time of auto renew (range of a few hours) is mentioned when you are logged into the web site (and app I assume) when it is a few days away from the renewal date. If you don't have much data/minutes left, or are lazy, this is fine, it will auto renew by itself every 30 days without logging in or doing anything.

But at any time, you can click "Renew Now" to do a manual renew, and your new month will start immediately, but any data/minutes you still have will carry over, e.g. if you have 0.5GB left, and manually renew your 1GB data plan, you will have 1.5GB for the new month. It makes sense to do this manual renew close to (but before) the auto renew time so you don't lose any days of the previous month. I've banked 15GB+ on some accounts (I'm not using as much data now that I WFH).
