Very bad warranty on tosot brands, we have a unit where the compressor is leaking from top, and we've been waiting for tosot to source the part and ship it to the distributor to have our unit fixed and it's been months of contact and all we can do is wait. It's just been a waiting game so far. So a more reputable and represented brand for heating and cooling would be more preferable.

The unit is precharged in the sense that the refrigerant comes with the unit. It's locked away in the outdoor unit. You have to install both units and make the lineset connections between the two, which are at normal atmosphere with moisture inside them, and evacuate the lines, and then you release the refrigerant. There is Mr Cool, which provides a system where you wouldn't need to vacuum the line, but they cost more and seem to have a similar level of dependability. You can borrow vacuum and manifold gauge sets from Autozone for free through their loaner program. I did an install last month for a Costway unit and the vacuum process wasn't bad at all

I called a local heating and air place to see how much a mini split would cost. I was expecting maybe 2-3K since the units run about 1000-1500, and it will maybe be 1-2 day's worth of labor. Dude told me $7,000 for one room. What, are they making $5K per install?
I can literally get a 4 ton central hvac installed for that.

I heard that you can make these mini split units with low btu to be able to plug into your standard 115v house outlet. Is this true? That would be a much easier diy than to pay an a/c installer.
Well, it does say that right in the description.

But it pulls close to 16A, so you need to put it on a 20A breaker.

Coincidentally I bought two of the 115 volt models 6 weeks ago from Home Depot for about $650 each. I could have got slightly less direct from them manufacturers website, but I like the convenience of being able to return to Home Depot within 90 days if they don't work.

So far one is fully installed and has been running problem three for 2 weeks. It is so much better than the 20-year-old Central air system I have.

The second unit may go live this weekend. We'll see how it goes. I'm taking my time and doing things right.

Very happy with the purchase.

The only negatives I have are

1. even though the app will link to Google home, you cannot set the temperature from Google home assistant only. Turn the unit on or off or change the fan speed.
.
2. The power cables it shipped with are marked SOW type which is not allowed to be used for a fixed installation according to the NEC which makes it illegal to use in most jurisdictions. However, buying correct rated cable is cheap enough so I don't mind, just glad I caught it.

I was talking with a guy who works for an HVAC company. He was saying that most HVAC companies don't want to install these because they'd rather send their crews out on bigger jobs. As a result, they come in pretty high on the labor side relative to the cost of the unit itself. There are dedicated installers of mini splits that you can find occasionally. One I found was half the price, closer to $2k with the unit, whereas the HVAC places were anywhere from $4.5-6k.
It's actually because they get little return business on these mini splits, so they have to make their wad up front.

The HVAC portion of the install is very simple, which is why most people opt for the DIY route. But it becomes laughably easy if you ever have to replace the unit. The holes are already drilled and the wiring is already run, so all you're really doing is swapping units and evacuating the lines.

If you really want a cheap install, don't involve the HVAC guys at all. Get an electrician for the wiring and literally anyone who knows how to work a stud finder to pop a couple holes in your wall and mount the unit.

The entire AC evacuation kit can be purchased on Amazon for under $100. And then you own it for life.

Agreed

I was quoted $13.7k from a HVAC company for a 2 head mini split install.

Forget about mini split spare parts , just buy a complete spare $600 system and keeping it in the box to use for repair / replacement yourself.

To put that in perspective, $600 is cheaper than the call out fee from a HVAC company to replace a $20 starter cap on a central air system (I now do that myself too).

part number for the 115v is TST-SU-MUSE-09K110-WF manufacture lists it as a heat pump for both cooling and heating functions

also great deal - snagged one to install on my enclosed trailer.
I have a spare 12k I plan to use the same way. Going to be overkill for a 7x14 but a 2000watt gen should run it. 110 degree heat won't phase my adventures again.

That seems either laughably crazy high, I misunderstood, or you live 500 knots out in the Sahara. $13k just for install or they just upselling the hell out of something that is probably in this same league?

This quote is a ripoff. Also this post is not a good product. I was quoted 4k to install a 1T Carrier 19 SEER mini split.

Unless folks are in a situation where the install is super easy, it is best to go with quality equipment. Mine going on 2nd story.

Bought two! One will go in my Class C RV instead of the rooftop unit, the second one in the house.

This is not a deal. I've been had.
If you search Amazon for "9,000 mini split" there are dozens of those identically looking noname units at about the same $500 price point. I bought two earlier today and should have done more research. Now Woot won't let me cancel.

What is the correct rated cable? I assume you're referring to the cable between the indoor and outdoor units?

Idk about this. Most of the mini split units do "look" identical on the outside. I can tell you from personal experience, my Tosot compressor unit is MUCH heavier than my Pioneer compressor unit. I imagine this means better quality, but have no proof so far.

It qualifies. It's SEER2 20. It exceeds the minimum SEER2 16 requirement.
