I just came back from Sydney via SFO on United, originate from Dallas (paid $820 RT). With Global Entry, going thru border control took less than a min (even faster than flight crew). And drop off bags to my connecting flight was quick and easy. I use points and $$ to upgrade to Polaris, to enjoy their lounge and seating. SFO has amazing Polaris lounge - took a shower and slept, and enjoy table dining. Didn't notice any racism in Sydney, as there are 600k Chinese out of 5 mil, and I am Asian.

You have go through immigration at the first port of entry in the country so for US it will be LA and you will need to pick up your checked bags and go through security and check in again. That's the norm

Returning from New Zealand through LAX we had to change terminals, recheck our bags and go through security and almost missed our flight, so consider avoiding flights with a short layover
Same thing as SFO coming from Aukland and security was having issues so backed up and no way to accommodate. At least at LAX, we were able to recheck our luggage much quicker. Literally ran through the airport and onto the plane that had already boarded.

Thank you. Not sure what people mean by racism, if you in any major city you will be fine. Maybe if you going to some boondocks town or something you may catch some looks, just like anywhere in the states and so on. Lots of Asians, Muslims, and any other ethnicity/minority in Australia. Enjoy ! Bondi is beautiful and the dates are for summer travel which are peak season so a great deal.

I don't think all airports in the US make you go through security again. But maybe that's based on where the flight originated.

Getting a lot of looks isn't racism. I go to rural China a lot and many haven't seen a caucasian person before. I get stared at a lot, and my wife with blonde hair gets more. I stand out and looking at something abnormal is something each of us do. Despite my being different the people are very kind and helpful. There could be racism happening but I have never noticed it. My main issue is the Chinese government that blocks Google, Gmail and what hotels I can stay at. That is based on nationalism though, not race. Your comment about small towns are more racist/bigoted than any stares or comments I have ever gotten traveling around the world.

Only a grand from ORD. Kinda wish I wasn't a responsible adult so I could just do this!

The racism in Australia is terrible. Spend your tourist dollars elsewhere.

if the flight originated outside the US and your final destination is another airport in the US, the first point of entry you will need to go through security screening again.

it is a standard procedure at this point - several people I know forgot they bought stuff at duty free and had to discard it when their carry on was screened again.

If I have checked bags, how do I tell if they will be automatically transferred or have to pick up and recheck?

Yeah, maybe I'm mixing up when I've flown from from Dublin to Ohare and they actually processed it like a domestic flight with a pre-screening. You land domestic side. Still, I don't think so. I've flown multiple times in and out of Ohare, and I don't think that we had to exit and go through security. Maybe they did a screening somewhere else. I just know that in places like Philadelphia, they dump you outside, and you come. In the security line with everyone else. I don't think that's how they do it with ORD.

I second this. If you are Asian avoid at all costs it's not worth the BS.
You kidding, right? Sydney has much more Asian people compared to any US city. Unless you were in some rural areas far far away from civilization. But I bet, somewhere deep in Alabama you won't be very welcome. I can even believe in black people encountering racism in Australia as seeing black folks is not usual for aus apart from some high-crime Melbourne areas, but Asians?. Feels like you were grossed out by "oi, mate" greeting or drunk dudes on the street calling some Asian friend a c*nt.

yes, Dublin has CBP Preclearance facility so the security screening is equal to what the US has - this just means your inbound flight drops you off in a terminal area equivalent to any other domestic flight.

ultimately this will vary based on airport but Sydney is not on the list: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/preclearance

so for anyone coming from Sydney they'd clear CBP on the LAX side, and depending on which terminal they route the flight to it'd either be T2/T6 if airplane is parking at the airline terminals, or TBIT CBP if parking at TBIT gates.

can't say with certainty because that will depend on airport operations/flow that day.

Sydney is nice! I got that crazy web special right before lock-down. 5K AA Miles LAX to SYD and same amount going back! That was slick but economy for such long flight is not fun unless you have whole row to yourself or at least exit row. I had both so no complaints!

Not a fan of LAX from past experience. Checking our list of OZ friends now to who's near Sidney. We could do NZ if that comes up.
