For those of us that aren't well versed in this stuff, what are pre-outs used for?

It lets you send a audio signal to an external (usually much more substantial) amplifier.

Higher end systems will use the receiver as a "signal processor", connect the pre-outs to a dedicated, higher powered amp. Dedicated amps will generally have better specs and be able to push their power with all channels driven.

For most home use cases, it's overkill. I wouldn't mind the upgrade, but I have some DIY speakers that really open up when driven with some extra power. My old Pioneer is still doing fine, but my next AVR will have pre-outs so I have an upgrade path.

Just for clarification:
Pre-out = pre amplification or pre amp.

Lot's of abbreviations thrown around with little explanation. There is consumer pre of .775v and then there is commercial pre or 2v+.

For the most part it can be interchanged and swapped around, but sometimes you need that extra drive to get the signal strong enough. In which case there are adapter and converters galore. But the best practice is to always match like kind with like kind..... Prosumer with pro gear, consumer with, well, consumer gear. And pay no attention to the "pro" anymore as it has been beaten to death by the populous and is now a completely meaningless prefix!

The day they put PRO on a dumb phone is the day it truly became meaningless! But the truth is we already know it happened before that.... I digress.

But do pay attention to the voltage! The numbers will tell you more than any word ever could. The numbers can always be mixed and matched with the right transformer or connector otherwise. It's only complicated until you learn it 😁.

Doesn't seem to have latest bells & whistles but for strictly movie watching this is a fantastic price that allows 5.1.4 setup

Has Zone 2 or 3 output on the speaker terminals.

Also has a line out for zone 2
im assuming their app still sucks balls... ive tried using two versions (one no longer supported on lastest phones) and it is such crap, one app worked for turning the zones on, another only worked for volume and half the time shit like spotify and pandora didnt work at all

Why offer what one needs (updated processor and HDMI) when they can force you to keep buying amplifier channels after amplifier channels??
Separate qualify amplifiers literally last for decades. Pretty much the only thing which ages out are the capacitors, which generally are fairly easy to replace.

The real drawback with the current AVR sales/marketing paradigm is that it forces the consumer to repurchase amplifier channels over and over again.

One also has balanced versus unbalanced, etc. I could be wrong, but I can not recall a single AVR with balanced XLR preamp outs. Those are reserved for very high end processors/preamps.

Yeah, app is still crap. I had a version once that was actually useful for accessing the system settings, but this newer app version is useless.

True, if you need XLR look elswhere, typically higher end but even then you normally only get 2 XLR's for the mains. To get more you'll probably have to look at pre-amp only receivers. Many now offer RCA pre outs, but this is not one of those models. This has been a good receiver for me, I have no complaints about it. But if I were buying one today, the RZ50 or 70 is where I'd be looking.

Pre-outs are typically RCA connections that allow you to offload the receiver by connecting to external amps. The lowest tier AVRs usually won't have them but may offload the L and R channels at best (all SW connections are technically pre-outs). Mid-tier AVRs and up will have any combo of 5.1, 7.1, etc. pre-outs.

You also have to be careful when matching the AVR w/the amp. An AVR that outputs <2V from the pre-outs typically needs a high-gain amplifier (i.e. more powerful). AVR bench tests and amp specs will give you this info!
