Woot has the Linksys mx10600 velop mesh wifi router two pack for $89.99. This is two mx5300 units.
I bought when it was offered at $130.

It's Qualcomm IPQ8071a based with 4x4 radios on all bands. 2.4GHz and one 5GHz are 802.11ax and one 5GHz is 802.11ac.
Stock firmware has not been updated since 2022. It's supported in OpenWRT snapshots though. I installed opener and it works fine.
To bypass the screen that seems to force you to use the Linksys app when you connect to the web UI, click on the picture of the phone. Then click CA at the bottom of the page.

stupid SD transforms the deep link, use the one above, search for MX5300 in the upper right corner.
Once you reboot you'll need to use ssh to install openwrt on the second partition so when it fails to boot it'll recover to openwrt rather than stock fw.

The AX86U won't ever be supported by OpenWRT, it's Broadcom based.

The link provided will answer the VPN throughput question.
I went with the MX5300 for the faster radios and CPU.
MX4200 and LN1301 have
1.4 GHz quad core CPU
2x2 2.4 GHz AX
2x2 5 GHz AX
4x4 5 GHz AX
MX5300 has
2.2 GHz quad core CPU
4x4 2.4 GHz AX
4x4 5 GHz AC
4x4 5 GHz AX
Most of my devices are not AX so I didn't want to go to fewer streams compared to the 3x3 on all bands AC4000 router I already have. The extra streams help with range and MU-MIMO for client devices with fewer than 4 streams.
