Original game was from Sega Saturn console but remastered for Xbox family.
Not on sale or anything but cheap enough. Just wanted to post for fun b/c it was one of if not thee best beat'em up games of all time. There was no game like it when it was released in 1996 and i don't think there's any that surpasses this level of production value even in 2024. Its fighting system is pretty good even for modern day standards. I was trying to see if it was available for PC but sadly only xbox family.

It's the most detailed/complex beat'em up game that i know of w/ rpg elements like controlling stat upgrades on your character and several "arch types" to choose from. Complex fighting mechanics not just punch/kick/special; we're talking blocks, air combos, full screen explosions, giant beam fireballs, chip damage. Symphony-like soundtrack. Even has alternate storyline branches/endings to choose from. For replayability, it offers Arena mode to pvp (human or npc) with your favorite storyline characters even nonplayable ones from Story mode. (bosses, minor/major characters, cannon fodders, wild animals, elderly, etc.)

Storymode: 2 players local/ online
Arenamode: 4 local/ 12 players online

Looks like low budget was used to recreate 2011 trailer and cover, makes sense. Here's a link to the game's original intro w/ "legit" anime touch plus gameplay. I think in the game you can also choose original Saturn graphics or the remastered graphics.

I still have my Saturn copy, but I'm nervous about trying to play it.

Might be a good idea to have a digital backup

I played this a ton as a kid, the multi player mode with friends was so dope. I probably beat it like 20 times trying to unlock all the different endings and chapters

Gamestop is buying this back for $32 store credit if your interested. Not trying to pawn your stuff but you could easily pay for the digital copy and then some if your nervous about playing it. Plus I highly doubt they have a same Saturn to test it on

I wish I still had my Sega Saturn collection, they are worth a bit of money now.

What exactly makes this 'remastered'? Updated sprites? resolution? Wondering if it's better to replay it on an emulator or xbox, thanks!
A remastered version of Guardian Heroes for Xbox Live Arcade was released on October 12, 2011.[18]
The port makes numerous changes to the original. It has been reformatted for 16:9 aspect ratio, expanding the playfield. The game features both original and "remix" graphics modes and runs in high definition with a remade user interface in both. The remix mode applies an hqx-like upscaling filter along with a pencil-shade effect to the sprites, implements true alpha blending, applies bilinear filtering to the backgrounds and features redrawn spell effects and character portraits.
Players can also choose between original and remix options for the gameplay. Remix mode makes many changes to the game's control and mechanics, but does not impact level design or content. Some of these changes, like the new attacking and dodging controls, air dashing, and air recoveries, were modeled after Treasure's own Bleach: The Blade of Fate, a fighting game that likewise features elements of Guardian Heroes.[citation needed] The script for Story Mode has been rewritten and contains updated dialogue as well as changes in name to the Earth and Sky Spirits, who are now known as the Earthblood and the Skyborn, respectively.
The XBLA release also features online play for the multiplayer modes, and an expanded competitive mode that allows for 12 players instead of six.[19] Arcade Mode, an endless survival gauntlet, is a new addition.
This version was made backwards compatible with the Xbox One on November 6, 2016.
